I bought this as we are going to Corfu in a couple of weeks and will be based in the Northern part of the island. We intend to hire a car and explore. This book detailing the villages is perfect for our needs. The villages sound fascinating and we can't wait to discover a few of them.

It's about this time of year (April) when I have had more than enough of winter that my thoughts turn to where I can find some warm, early, summer sunshine. Dvd's like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Shirley Valentine and Mama Mia fuel that desire and provide a temporary `fix'. Filled with images of luscious scenery, turquoise seas and white sandy beaches, I crave my on own little corner of paradise, if only for a week or two? What I don't want is the thronged, loud, boozed up, sex-on-the-beach variety but then Mike & Donna's guide is not for those folks who will inevitably book the cheapest package to some purpose built pit they don't even know much less care about.

This guide is for the discerning traveler who wants to the insider track on Corfu, its people history, customs, food and drink and most importantly those extra special, unspoiled places that thankfully still exist on the island according to Mike & Donna who list them geographically with a short synopsis, where you can go to avoid all of the above. Nicely written with more enticing photographs, the authors weave in amusing anecdotes from Homers Odyssey and the brothers Durrell as well as useful information on everything from what to do if you get spiked by a sea urchin to what to eat in `honest' Taverna's and even how to drink Ouzo?

Perhaps, if you are a seasoned traveler to the Greek Islands you already know all there is to know about Greeces' signature blue and white churches, the olive trees, those stone presses you see lying around and the best day to gather wild herbs like Oregano (St John's Day the 24th June) by the way, I am and I didn't. So, if like me you would prefer your holiday in Corfu to be a proper and thoroughly enjoyable travel experience, then this is the guide for you.

I bought this in lieu of our usual Lonely Planet or Rough Guide as, at the time of purchase, there was no dedicated guide to Corfu by either.

I found this guide rather two-dimensional. Many villages/areas were almost dismissed, some others received a positive review, however there was little depth or opportunity for the reader to come to their own view based upon information presented. Despite the randomly interspersed nuggets on Corfiot culture, ceremonies, etc., I found this rather a dull guide. I also disagreed with many of the views put forward, for example my husband and I found The Old Fort in Corfu Town to be a fascinating place to spend a morning with our young son, who was engaged by the treasures in the small Byzantine museum, etc.

It also misses useful taverna/ restaurant reviews.

For me it felt as though I was reading a guide written by a rather conservative set of parents-in-law.

Fine travel Guide - with some good tips and places to see. It's not like Lonely Planet or Blue Guide but it's good considering the price

Just back from our trip to Corfu and this was by far the most helpful of the travel guides we read. Thanks Mike Gerrard.
