As soon as you receive the box, it's evident that Corel haven't scrimped on extras in this impressive package. With a hefty, comprehensive manual, an inspirational book of tips, and an exhaustive catalogue of all the included content, nothing is left out.

The core of the package consists of the two applications CorelDraw and Corel Photo-Paint, which seem squarely aimed at the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop market respectively. As a heavy user of both the latter in my job, I was keen to see how Corel's offering measured up to the market leaders in both day-to-day and heavy-duty tasks. It was also important for me to find out how quickly I could migrate my skills across to Corel and start using it straight away - with little time to retrain on the job.

I wasn't disappointed. For one thing, the creative tools in CorelDraw particularly are exceptionally intuitive and robust. Take flowing text around paths, or inside objects for example. In CorelDraw, all you need to do is create your path or shape, then switch to the text tool and hover over the object. Then simply click and type, and hey presto, text on a path, completely painless!

In fact, text formatting features have to be the absolute strong point of CorelDraw overall, not only due to the innovative addition of WhatTheFont, a handy utility to analyse and identify unknown fonts. Also impressive are its table handling features, with seamless spreadsheet import and interactive handling of data.

Fills are also handled very naturally in CorelDraw, with almost Flash-style bisection of shapes by lines - great for creating and chopping up simple shapes to make more complex objects.

I have to admit that I've bad-mouthed Corel more than once in my life, especially back before my employer saw the light and dumped WordPerfect Suite for Microsoft Office, but I have nothing but praise for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4. Not only is this an impressive, powerful suite of graphics design tools, Corel doesn't throw you under the bus as soon as you install the software. If you're like me and don't have a single artistic bone in your body (I can't draw a straight line with a ruler), you would expect a fancy-pants software package like this to leave you dumbfounded from the start, with no clue on how to get started. Much to their credit, Corel throws you lifelines as soon as you jump in the pool and makes a diverse set of rescue resources near at hand for you at all times. I'm not saying you'll be a graphics design guru after a couple of hours - this is a really advanced, powerful set of programs here - but you would have a hard time finding a piece of software with more impressive built-in support. The first of several excellent video tutorials is available on the Welcome screen, and you can choose to have a built-in docket of usage tips available for every function you choose. Users of previous versions of the software will have no problem recognizing the changes this upgrade brings with it, as you can choose to have every single change and addition from your previous version highlighted on the screen. That doesn't sound like much, but it is a big help. You also have What's New and Learning Tools readily available to you from the Welcome screen as well as from inside each of the featured programs. Of course, you also have a complete help file available but you won't need to resort to using that very often.Read more ›

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've been using Corel since Corel Draw 4, since (eek) the early '90s. I've always found their software to be very user-friendly and very, very efficient at producing the results I want. When I first started using this software it was just for fun, really; I didn't really utilise everything it could do, even with a version as relatively basic as Corel Draw 4. I've since become a professional graphics artist and have stuck with Corel all this time, although I hadn't upgraded since version 10. As a result, I was a little bit nervous of jumping right up to X4 (yes, even as a professional). Well, I needn't have been...

If you've ever used Corel for graphics before, you'll be pleased to know that the interface, while obviously being updated for Vista, works in exactly the same way as it always has, with the optional welcome screen. If you're new to Corel, you won't have a problem navigating to the functions you need. That's the beauty of Corel, I always found their software incredibly easy to pick up - if you use Microsoft Word for your word processing tasks I can't recommend Corel WordPerfect enough. The menus are logically arranged, with options and sub-menus on each arranged in such a way that you quickly become accustomed to where things are, or if it's an action you haven't done before, where it's likely to be. That surely is something new users benefit from immensely. If you're familiar with this software from an earlier version, you won't have any problems here. Of course one or two things have been shifted around, streamlined a bit here and there, but it's all simple enough to find.

I've always used the Photo-Paint part of this software more than Draw itself, as it's very similar to Adobe Photoshop, just as functional and dare I say easier and more accessible to new users.
