Good - but has compatability issues

I had a great Netgear Homeplug network working with two 500 units and one 200 unit (mk1) and a wifi unit.

I originally had to send back 2 500 units as (having bough 4) I found that 4 would not work together - 3 hours on Netgear support ended with no solution.

I wished to add two more and ordered the 200 (mk2) units - I was a bit suprised to find similar problems with the 200 (mk2) units - only working imtermittently with the 500 units.

These were sent them back and a replacement order made for another set of 200 (mk1) unit and wifi extender - this comes with a mk1 200 unit and it works fine.

Summary - the Netgear Homeplug adapters and wifi extenders work great - but for some reason only 2 500 units work together - more will not talk to each other - and the 200 mk2 units also seem to have a problem communicating with the 500 units whilst the 200 mk1 units work fine with them.

Hope this helps anyone considering a multiple Netgear Homeplug set up - with just two units any seem to work together - but with more than 2 units there seems to be some compability issues - which were resolved as above (after Netgear support failed to find a solution other than return them to the retailer for credit).

Amazon were, as usual, fist class in taking the units back and supplying replacements - these now all work great together.

Netgear Powerline 200.

Although I paid Amazon extra for fast delivery and ordered in the morning they dispatched the following day and it took 5 days to reach me. Grumble over.

The units are very compact and lightweight and so very simple to set up. I found the diagrammatic instructions difficult and also lacking detail but found much better ones in these reviews. Instructions are hardly needed, as it is just too easy but I like to be careful with the unfamiliar. Installation actually takes under 2 minutes and has to, to comply with the security set up, so you need to be organised first.

My need was because my building has foil backed wall linings and Wi-Fi will not even reach the next room. So this powerline system was the perfect answer. I needed to feed two rooms well away from my master socket, so I had to buy two kits and now have a spare unit. My internet provider suggested this idea to me but wanted £130 for the kit, which include Wi-Fi which I did not require. So I have saved about £100. My download speed is now up from an average of around 3Mbs to an average around 6Mbs . on both computers. I wish I had fitted this years ago.

DATA SPEED: It is not the function of this system to boost your speed but it results in an increase if your previous circuit shared with the landline and was full of filters and connections as mine was.

EXTENSION LEADS. I note some saying these will not work with extension leads. All three of the units I am using are ON extension leads with multiple outlets in use. The one on my computer is plugged into a 5 gang extension lead which itself is plugged into a 15 metre Jo Jo extension reel. I can only think that the problem occurs with filtered or anti surge extensions.

I chose Netgear because I have used one of their modems for years with no problems. I hope this is as reliable.

Did just what I wanted

In common with some people buying this product I recently purchased an (LG) Smart TV capable of connecting directly to the internet. However the TV's required location was in a WiFi dead spot. I was faced with two possible solutions, 1. extend the WiFi network or 2. use these ethernet adapters and connect the TV directly to the router.

Reading around it seems that internet TV is quite bandwidth hungry and as we only get max 5mbps of broadband service it was important that I got as much of that to the TV as possible. I therefore opted for these as they promised to get more bandwidth to the TV than WiFi.

When they arrived I plugged them both in via extension leads, with one of those a Belkin SurgeMaster (despite the instruction book suggesting it would not work) pressed the button on the one next to the router, walked to the one near the TV, pressed the button and we were away. It could not have been easier. The TV found the signal itself & I was watching BBC iPlayer within 5 mins.

Yes, although the two units are plugged into different ring main electrical circuits, both these circuits pass through the same consumer unit / distribution board / fuse box. If this had not been the case then it would not have worked as the signal cannot jump between two different consumer units that are not electrically connected together. They've been working for a couple of weeks so far with no issues at all.

I bought these to get a connection into the souvenir shop next door to our Lifeboat station (I am a Lifeboat mechanic), so that the Ladies who run the shop could do their stock ordering on the spot, which is a great convenience to them.
I opted for a wired connection, rather than WiFi because it's more secure and typically a wee bit faster, Also kept the cost down which is nice.
Installation was as easy as claimed, although I had to make up a new Cat5 cable as the 2 supplied cables are the standard 2 metres or so and didn't make it across to the router from the wall socket.
After that I just plugged it in, connected it to the router and pressed the button. Then walked next door and plugged in it's friend and pressed the button there.
The station and the shop ultimately get their power from the same consumer unit so even though the adaptors are running on sockets fed by different MCBs, there was no issue with connectivity. I did a quick speed check and it was perfectly satisfactory, given that the internet infrastructure locally is not good. Certainly there was no noticeable difference in speeds between the adaptor in the shop and the WiFi in the crewroom, next to the router.
However - 200Mbps claim needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. You're never going to achieve that speed as the 10/100 ports they (and the router) use will not support speeds greater than 100Mbps, so effectively that's the limit.
All in all it was money well spent. Delivery was prompt, packaging excellent and user instructions very basic, but adequate.
