This 6A push-On push-Off foot operated switch is a very useful hands-free solution to controlling a standard lamp. It is intended for light indoor dry domestic use only.

It only switches one wire, and in the UK this must be the Brown live wire. There are terminals for the other two wires, or they can be passed through with just with the live wire interrupted by the switch. The cord grips are of the standard clamp type and reasonably effective.

It is tough enough to stand up to normal domestic use, but don't even think about risking it near any water, or coffee spills etc, because it has no pretence of any ingress protection.

Assembling the wiring into it is fiddly because there is not much room inside and it is only held together by the cover screws. I have several of them in use with the normal 3Amp or 5Amp three core mains flex, nothing bigger will fit.

I have a couple of alternative uses to the normal floor lamps:
with an Overhead Projector for transparencies at a presentation - to avoid that boring white patch on the wall burning out the audience's eyes when they should have their attention elsewhere;
on the desk-bound PSU for my laptop's docking station for when I'm not using it - at 6W the standby power is far too high.

This type of foot switch is widely available from DIY outlets as well as on-line at a wide range of prices. Some multipacks, five switches at a time, can be found for less than a tenner.

A bit fiddly to connect up: when you get it open, the switch inside falls out, as does the spring. But it's fairly obvious how it all goes back together and the operation is simple & reasonably robust. The cable entrance holes are only large enough for standard 2a lighting cable (flat or round): might just about fit 5a cable but it would be tight.

Easy to wire in (it was a replacement switch) and works well. However, it does not appear to be the strongest materials used and I do query how long it will last considering that you use your foot to operate it.

After spending sometime to wire this switch up,having to cut my lamp cable,the switch blew 2 x3amp fuzes.it was not just not fit for purpose.the item only costing £5 odd,cost £8 postage.i am also expected to pay postage for it to return item what a nonsense and would not recommend this switch was binned weeks ago.

I would have given this foot switch zero stars but I couldn't find out how to do so. It is fiddly to wire and although there are no instructions, as others have said, it is fairly obvious how it's done. The fact is it doesn't work consistently. Mostly it fails to switch.
It operates less consistently than the one it was bought to replace.
