This is the first in a set of five novellas (published together as Monstrous Little Voices) which can be read separately but which also fit together to create a bigger narrative. What binds them is an engagement with Shakespeare's characters in a story which spans characters from the plays (Miranda, Prospero, Orsino, Oberon, Titania), Shakespeare's sources (Ovid's Pomona and Vertumnus), the Renaissance world (the Medici, the Ottomans) and even Will himself and Anne Hathaway.
The stories play with the Shakespearean canon, extending, recreating and re-writing the stories attached to characters. This one is my favourite, a delicate and perceptive exploration of the relationship between Miranda and Ariel. It probes some of the problematics of The Tempest: the nature of Prospero and his power, issues of gender and ownership.
I think you probably do need to have a fairly good acquaintance with the plays (The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, possibly Twelfth Night) to get the most from these tales, but all are imaginative engagements with Shakespeare's own works. A nice tribute for the 400th anniversary of his death.
