The robbers of London town plan a desperate crime one Christmas Eve - to steal all the toys they can lay their hands on! Fortunately, the robbers meet their match in brave Officer Pugh who leaps into action and arrests the villains - all except Grandma Swagg who manages to get away. Janet and Allan Ahlberg created some of the world's most popular picture books, including EACH PEACH PEAR PLUM and THE JOLLY CHRISTMAS POSTMAN, both winners of Greenaway Medals, and THE BABY'S CATALOGUE, inspired by their daughter Jessica. Janet died in 1994 and Allan, a former teacher, now lives in London.

As an adult I still talk to my Dad about this book and how much I enjoyed it when we read it together when I was little. And now as a dad-to-be, imagine then how happy I was when I received a new copy from my parents to read to my child when he or she is old enough (although I think it may have been sent for me rather than the baby)! It is solid gold and a must for any parent to get their kids reading and more importantly to enjoy it.
The image of a gang of robbers attempting to ruin Christmas being thwarted by the work of Officer Pugh is both funny and intriguing and will keep your child hooked to the end.
Once bought never forgotten (this is probably the only book i properly remember from my childhood) this is a book you'll be forced to read time and time again to your children but won't mind doing so.
It is an excellent opportunity for those cherished moments of a parent-child relationship that can be remembered forever and passed down through generation to generation. That in itself surely is testimony of a great book having been remembered by a child (son) and later discussed in great detail with cherished memories. Certainly people should recognise this books as a classic, simliar to A.N Mill's Winnie the Pooh.
Television is seen as one of the greatest mediums of this century, but surely this book proves that nothing can be better than the intimacy of a parent reading to a child. The proof of that moment is the child's recollection of those memories in later life.
Firstly, I've got to say that once you read this book, you'll fall in love with it. Janet and Allan Ahlberg are an amazing writing duo, and it's no surprise that the books they wrotes decades ago (this book is an amazing 34 years old) are still as successful, still in print and still among some of the most popular children's books on library lists. Allan Ahlberg was responsible for the words in their books, with his wife Janet illustrating them, and while the words are fantastic, for me it is the illustrations in this book which really bring it to life and make it so readable. The illustrations are so bright and colourful, some taking up full pages, others fitting in around the text and it works perfectly, they complement the words exactly, and children love to look at them. The detail in these images, particularly the full page ones are outstanding.
The fun thing about this text is that it is rhyming throughout the book, and has a great rhythm as you read it aloud. Due to the way it's written, it is somehow so easy to memorise and you'll find yourself reeling off passages of the book without really needing to put much effort into remembering it.Read more ›
