Product Description

Product Description

Small-town sheriff Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone) harboured dreams of making it as a New York cop before he lost his hearing in one ear saving the life of the woman he loved (Annabella Sciorra). Now Freddy has the chance to make his mark, when he discovers a case involving murder and police corruption. However, he will have to confront and possibly battle against men he has always respected in the process.

From Amazon.co.uk

After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of co-stars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, but Cop Land still packs a white-knuckled punch. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Released in 1997 to little success the film has grown in stature through its release on dvd and what i must say is that this is a masterpiece, possibly ranking alongside stallones performance in rocky and rocky 2 in particular, his other films although mainly good never demanded a performance of grandeur, here stallone is magic.

The film also has what could be deemed an all star cast in harvey keitel, robert de niro and ray liotta who all come second fiddle in terms of acting to stallone, thats true whether you accept it or not.

Stallone plays freddy who is a small time cop in a town which is a haven to cops who work in the city,so it is clear that stallone doesnt have alot to do except maybe taking cats down from trees, but when deception, murder and corruption visit the town stallone has choices to make with regards to the cops who aint as clean as they make out.

The movie is intense and fast paced and certainly dramatic but equally enjoyable and uncomplicated but its certainly much more than a standard action movie, priceless.

I saw this film in it's original dvd form, and was hugely impressed, but this blue ray version is so much better.

In 1997 this was Director Mangold's first venture into big time Hollywood, and look at the cast, De Niro, Liotta, Keitel, but the biggest surprise (even to himself) was Stallone. The latter plays the overweight, overlooked sap of a Sheriff, Freddy Heflin, who is charged with looking after 'Copland', being the homes and families of the the 'real' cops who work over the river.

Freddy looks up to the big-city police officers, who ultimately are revealed as less than wholesome and who try to 'protect' one of their own, with the complicity of Cop Land and, of course, Freddy. This is a superior Cop movie lending it's self to the western genre, with particular thanks to High Noon in it's build up and final shoot out.

What I would say to anyone who has not seen this film is not to be put off by Stallone's inclusion, as he plays his part very well and to those who have previously seen it, then buy this blu ray version. It is extended in small but significant ways, which have all been included at the director's express wish and which only serve to enhance the film. The blu ray rendition is of very high quality as is the haunting soundtrack by Howard Shore, which all add to the viewing experience. There are also interesting extras and director's commentary.

The acting is of the highest order, with Liotta probably taking the plaudits. I think this film is a much overlooked gem, which is a must for all De Niro fans and for those who are not fans of Stallone, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

Rewatching "Copland" on BLU RAY - you're struck by a few things. First - what a top movie this is - and the reputation it's gained as such since its 1997 release - is fully justified.

Second - is the astonishing cast. I count more than 15 world-class actors - Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, Cathy Moriarty, John Spencer (of The West Wing), Peter Berg (of Chicago Hope), Robert John Burke and Terry Serpico (of Rescue Me), Malik Yoba (of Defying Gravity and Alphas), Bruce Altman (of Damages and Blue Bloods), Paul Calderon (of Hostages and Law & Order), Vincent Laresca (of Weeds and 24), Frank Vincent, Edie Falco, Arthur J. Nascarella, John Ventimiglia and Tony Sirico (all of The Sopranos) - there's even Blondie's Debbie Harry as a bar owner. Yet despite that formidable array of acting chops - it's all over for the lot of them the moment Sylvester Stallone steps onto the screen - in what has to be a career best for him.

Our Sly plays Freddy Heflin - a lumbering New Jersey cop who is coasting through his job as local town Sheriff. Freddy lives in Garrison, New Jersey (population 1280) - off jurisdiction home to many of New York's Transit Cops who moved there in the Seventies when crime threatened to engulf the Big Apple. Freddy stands over a pinball machine on his friendless birthday in the all Blue '4 Aces' Bar - dutifully overlooking an NYPD bag being passed between yet another cop Gary Figgis and a female badge at a nearby table (Ray Liotta and Edie Falco). "That's Freddy!" Gary reassures the nervous Bertha. "He's my guy! He's cool!" Gary smiles - he'll have no problem keeping the sedate Heflin under control.

The title "Cop Land" refers to an area of New Jersey where police officers and their families are in majority. Most of the cops work in the big city (NY) and the only law enforcer left is Sheriff Freddy (Sylvester Stallone), a docile, overweight, and half-deaf guy who lives alone. Always the diplomat, Freddy doesn't realise at first that something as nasty as corruption is starting to infest his cop neighbors/friends. As things get hot, Freddy is drawn ever closer to a point of no return for the second time in his life (the first time was when he without thinking jumped into the river and saved the life of a woman he still loves).
This is one of the best "crime dramas"/"cop thrillers" I've seen. It's intelligent, suspenseful, and has some very nice characterizations. Stallone does an unforgettable performance here, taking advantage of his gentle manner of speaking and his slow, sweet smile and adding a depth to his character that makes you really care for this guy. The rest of the cast is also great, especially Keitel and Liotta (who looks more bloated then ever).
Who will win the dirty game of corruption? That is the question which is being played out with ingenous plot complexity and strong emotions sizzling beneath the surface. If you choose to spend some time with Freddy & the gang, you'll find it was a time well spent.
