Does what it says on the tin! Helps you assess if you have IBS. Also then goes on to provide the kind of lifestyle advice your GP doesn't have time to get into. The detail on different kinds of foods and how they affect your digestive system from day to day is also invaluable, e.g. which kinds of food and drink aggravate wind, bloating... The different roles played by dietary fibre... Frank and down-to-earth.

This is a comprehensive book about irritable bowel syndrome, its causes and remedies. As the author points out, "irritable" and "bowel" do not generally conjure up the image people would like to have of themselves, which is why it is a little-understood, but very common, condition. The book includes plenty of information on diet, relaxation and alternative medicine. There is also a chapter on stress, but this is marred by some very outdated, patronising comments, such as "If a working woman has a husband and children, she may feel additional guilt at neglecting her traditional role as home-maker" (actually we're not in the 1950s any more!) and "Have confidence that to touch someone of the same sex does not mean that you are gay, and that you can hug someone of the same sex without any sexual overtones" (those of us in the modern world know that already, thanks). Unfortunately the stress caused for a modern person reading these gems of traditionalist twaddle will possibly outweigh the many good suggestions for stress-relief in the book. But it is generally a well-written and informative guide to IBS and what can be done about it.

With a book like this, you don’t expect it to be written by Shakespeare – that said, Rosemary Nicol knows what she’s talking about, and she can string a sentence together too. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) then this book is a great place to learn more about the condition, its causes and its treatment.

I’ve recently been diagnosed with IBS myself, which is why I read her book – if nothing else, it’s reassuring. That’s good – stress can worsen the symptoms, so avoid it.

Which says it all really.
Recommended first read if you need to find out about IBS and have an "it's all in your mind" GP.
