Potential for a cult following?

Sifting through all the trash on Amazon Prime is a thankless task. I was looking for a thriller, and tried several films, all of which were so appalling I quickly gave up on them. Finally I thought I'd try Cop Car. And I'm glad I did. It's really rather good.

Two very young runaway kids, in a sort of dust–bowl backwater, chance upon what appears to be an abandoned police car. They wind up joyriding in it. Unbeknownst to them, the owner is merely off tending to grave matters. When he returns to find his ride gone, what started as trailer trash kiddy daydreams turn into a tense yet believable 'day-mare'.

The whole film is as lean and rangy as Kevin Bacon's physique. I want to hate Bacon, for the crappy mobile ads he does that pollute our TVs. But he is a superb actor, and plays his part in this movie perfectly. The whole film is stripped down, as bleak and dusty as the settings it's placed in.

The kids' mixture of innocence and naivety, stupidity and joie de vivre, all tainted with traces of the toxic fallout from a broken adult world, dovetail nicely into a movie in which kids wind up taking on adult roles, in an action movie that rather cleverly yet literally depicts the whole action/thriller genre as inherently dumb and childish.

It's not a Coen brothers rip-off, by any stretch, but there are traces of a similar dark humour at work. Apparently this bombed, making big losses. In a way I can see why. It's more a critique of rather than a celebration of the dumb alpha-male action men with guns fantasies that are so popular.

Not an obvious out and out classic, this. But I think Cop Car has potential for a cult following. All in all, I thought it was great. I was gripped all the way, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

2 young boys pinch a deserted police car, with disastrous consequences. Really good little film, with an indie feel and some very dark humour. Kevin Bacon is excellent and the two young lads really do themselves justice. Well directed, measured, I like the 'quietness' of the movie, and the fact there are a few loose endings that aren't really explained. Give it a look.

Considering the lack of expensive gimmicks, this is a highly watchable movie. I found it easy to become immersed because the drama is so believable. Great acting and dialogue and the cinematography carried the plot along well. I can't think who wouldn't like this film. Except young children (like two of the protagonists) of course.

If you have come to this film for out and out action, you're gonna be gutted. The film plays like a mix homage to the wilderness set bleak 'building tension' suspense chase, and 'coming of age drama' classics.... Duel meets Stand By Me maybe. The script does not bog itself down in the back story of the protagonists; who are the other parties, how did they come to be there etc. It mainly remains in the present and in real time, which makes a refreshing change. I

t leaves as many questions as it answers, especially at the very end. In fact most of the big questions remain unresolved. I found that a but frustrating, but also quite quirky. It Is a well shot suspense drama that is tense in places, having switched rapidly from the type of film you were led to believe you were watching from the first few minutes. All in all quite enjoyable.

Real characters, real acting - worth a look

You can't beat a solid, low-brow storyline that relies on good acting to make it work. This is a good example. A basic story just well told. The children actors are excellent, many men watching would recall their own similar moments from childhood (except looking down the barrel of a loaded gun trying to get it to work). Kevin Bacon does a great job of depicting a man on the edge. We never have his full story revealed or that of his car boot friends, but that was not needed.

COP CAR could so easily have been a cult classic - it comes pretty close.
Kevin Bacon is unreservedly excellent. He sustains 'intense anger' without being unrelentingly shouty (like Russell Crowe was in last year's 'Unhinged'). Easily the best Bacon I've seen for years.
And the plot is genuinely quirkily unpredictable. You think this might be the typical, run of the mill, corrupt cop road-movie... but it's not. It swerves and surprises, and delivers some genuine humour to balance out the moments of blood-soaked mayhem.
Made a huge loss, as you might imagine...

A very effective no-budget thriller. Bacon takes his character from X men First Class and ramps up the sleeze quoitent. Non-stop plot movement compressed into 80 minutes. The director Jon Watts handles the relationshop and dialogue between the two kids with aplomb; you can see why they gave him Spiderman Homecoming to direct after this.
