Sturdy yet stylish

Cooler Master are known for producing high quality computer peripherals, so you really cannot go wrong when buying this notebook cooler. I have bought this model for my MacBook Pro 17", and it blends in so well even though it does not share the same colour.

Key features:

- Build quality is top notch and second to none thanks to its sturdy metal construction
- Super silent, adjustable clip on fans for fast and easy removal and attachment (no tools required whatsoever)
- Rubber pads which stop laptop or stand itself from sliding
- USB port pass through (The USB port can still be used thanks to the design of the USB connector). This does makes the USB connector quite large
- Very stylish design sporting Cool Master logo
- Effective cooling even without fans attached
- Doubles as laptop protection due to the clever design and rubber pads on the interior.

The Coolermaster Notepal U3 was a good choice for me. I had been experiencing problems with my Dell Precision Laptop because of overheating even though it is not very old. As my laptop is 17" I was worried that the Coolermaster would not be a sufficient size for its footprint: I needn't have worried, it fits perfectly. The product contains three fans. They snap into place on the metal frame through the air holes very easily and quickly and can be removed just as easily and quickly. They are very quiet; indeed, at first I thought that they were not operating because they were so quiet! The fans are all wired to a single USB connector which does NOT take up a USB socket on my computer because the Coolermaster has thoughtfully made the connector with it own USB slot so that, although it plugs into a USB slot, it provides a USB slot! If I have a criticism it is that the USB connector protrudes around 2" from the side of my laptop: it could have been smaller and neater. However, the product is keeping my laptop cool, there is a noticeable difference and, thus far, the Dell has not overheated again. The three fans can be positioned anywhere on the metal frame to direct the cooling effect to your requirements. The frame itself can be used as additional protection for your laptop during transportation if necessary. The frame seems sturdy and well constructed and the angle is about perfect (it is not adjustable via the frame itself although I guess you could put something underneath it if you wanted to increase the angle). I cannot comment on the durability of the fans as I have not had the product long enough to say how long they will last or if they continue to perform as well as they are now. However, the fans are guaranteed for a year and have already been running continuously for three days without any problems. I am very happy with this purchase the answer to my problem was indeed 'blowing the wind'!

Have had this for over a year now. It's useful, though there are a few issues I have with it.
Firstly, it's great that you can position the fans how you want, although you have to be careful where you place them if you're planning to sit with it on your lap, so you don't get anything hitting the fan blades. Secondly, I myself ended up removing the fans completely, since I didn't actually notice much of a difference; having additional fans can be helpful, but only really if there's good air circulation. More than anything, just having the laptop standing off a surface helped the most most. Lastly, the pad itself has started to break, mainly at the handle where it's the least supported. It's a annoying, but is still functional at least.

Overall, it's alright, though I'd recommend something with a similar style but not as expensive.

Good product. However, it is slightly too big for my laptop as my laptop has a 15.6" screen whereas this pad is for 17.3" screens. However, the reason I am not dropping a star is because it comes with a band that can help keep your laptop seated on the pad. However, as I move my laptop a lot, the band is a slight hassle and I did end up losing it but only I am to blame. It kept my laptop from overheating which is a HP laptop with an i7 processor, meaning it is prone to overheating. Good product from a good manufacturer!

I have an Alienware M14x that tends to get hot after sustained gameplay and needed something to help it run cooler.

There is a very useful free program called HWMonitor which will monitor the temperature of your processor & graphics cards. I used this to check the performance of the different makes of stand after 30min of maxed out processor activity.

I experimented with various stands from the well known brands such as Targus & Belkin. If you will forgive the pun, the Cooler Master 'stands out' ahead of the rest.

The fans do help but don't make a huge difference when the laptop is very active. What really makes the difference seems to be the way the stand allows the air to flow around the laptop & through it's cooling system. Having said this, the fans can be moved to almost anywhere you like and so can be useful if you have an uncomfortable hotspot (say around the palm rest). They are also pretty quiet and I doubt you will notice them apart from in a silent room.

I also found the Cooler Master was the most comfortable to use. It is at just the right angle so that you don't really notice the elevation at the back. Also, at the front, you don't get the annoying gap between the bottom of the laptop & the table.

A final point that I hadn't realised when I bought it. If you take the fans out, you can fit the laptop inside the stand to protect the laptop during transport (they even provide a little strap to hold it in place). I don't think it would work with anything much bigger than a 15inch but could be useful.

The only downside I can think of is if you like to use your notebook on your lap. I'm not sure it will be very good for that but as I never do this, I can't really comment.

I'm also not sure how well it would cope with a 17inch laptop but I'm sure another reviewer will answer that one.

Overall, an excellent cooler & stand. For the price, very good value as well.
