Product Description

Joe Sickles (Robin Askwith) and Carol Thatcher (Janet Lynn) decide to leave their small village and head down to London for work. Joe fails to find any work but Janet enrols as a fashion model. As the naïve couple begin to enjoy the nightlife of London they are drawn ever deeper into a world of drink, pornography, drugs and prostitution. Their decline into the seedy side of London s nightlife takes them into swinging parties, immoral earnings and filmmaking; threatening to push them over the edge. Will the couple continue on the path of no return... or can they find a way out of their nightmare?

I gave this a 4 star for nostalgia, however maybe 3.5 stars are fairer. This is a typical 70's movie where 2 country dwellers decide to make their way to swinging London to make their fortunes. Due to their naivety, lack of money and easy morals, this leads them into a wild and crazy lifestyle that could never exist now. This apparently is based on a true story, and was considered very shocking for its time, however seems almost quite tame now. Some of the acting is quite wooden, and not sure that Askwith can play a straight role as it always seems he wants to make a cheap joke. The gorgeous Janet Lynn is also a bit out of her depth, but she gets away with it due to her combination of innocence combined with 70's morals.

Cool it Carol! is now somewhat a curiosity and a fascinating glimpse into 1970s Britain. At the time of release it got plenty of bad reviews and yet it is well made and is full of well known faces. I suppose it was pushing the sexual boundaries and compared with today there really isn't any nudity that would offend. Yes you do see Janet Lynn's breasts and Robin Askwith's shapely bottom and legs but that's about it. The objections were I'm sure to do with the depiction of the apparently permissive lifestyles in London. The establishment probably did not want to promote such a picture of the capital but it was there and director Pete Walker shows it . The film made a fortune abroad with American's lapping it up to the tune of $2 million. The ever youthful Jess Conrad who is interviewed on screen remembers the clubs, the scene and clearly with affection. His interview is a bonus in every way as is the original trailer. Look out for Stubby Kaye in the club scenes, he is certainly having a good time. And Pete Murray is there playing himself, his fee was we are told six silk ties! The film quality is good and clear as is the sound and the liner notes by Simon Sheridan author of "Keeping the British End Up-Four Decades of Saucy Cinema" put the whole thing into context.

I assume this film was made as a comedy drama but the finished product would have been much better if they'd hired someone other than the irritating Robin Askwith and just played it straight. Askwith's one talent is the ability to pull silly faces and look gormless, which he is amazingly good at. The one good reason for viewing this film is to watch the lovely Janet Lynn, whose movie career surprisingly sank without trace.

Felt like a lost film4.Wish you were here,or rita,sue etc.Its tounge in cheek but also shows the seedy side of London in 1970.Two late teens find that the big city life turns out nothing like their village upbringing.
It is only let down by an average unrestored picture.It is rated fifteen ,which is a fair assesmment of the content.Very enjoyable film.

Probably Pete (House of Whipcord, Die Screaming Marianne) Walker's best film. Cool It Carol is a largely unsentimental account of a young couple's adventures in 70's London and the things they have to do to make a living, with the inevitable spiral into moral turpitude.

Despite some titillating scenes - the odd bottom and boob, one discreet flash of hair - this is no saucy romp. Askwith (normally the always on-the-job bloke familiar from the 'Confessions' series and similar soft-sex titles of the time), here has doubts about his performance with women, is guaranteed nothing - and even occasionally fails to come through when it most matters. It must be said that neither he nor his co-star are the best of actors, although adequate. Carol's lack of self-loathing for the most part, while convenient (and even refreshing) in some ways, reduces the chance for any real drama and leaves her final change of mind a little flat.

Cool It Carol contains a striking porno shoot sequence made, one supposes, with elements of truth; but it's the powerful scene of Carol's first multiple paid sexual encounters which really remains in the mind as Walker effectively intercuts a boiling kettle with the feelings of the doubtful onlooker. With a better ending to his movie it would all have more memorable but, even with the abrupt final cop-out, it's still well worth a look. Picture quality is excellent. I'd also recommend Eskimo Nell as also worth renting from this same series, as well as The Wifeswappers. None are masterpieces but not worth wholesale critical burial either.

Just watched this, though it is classified as a comedy, it has some darker moments. Personally i prefer Pete Walkers horror contributions [House Of Whipcord, Frightmare & The Flesh And Blood Show] But each to their own i guess.
