Sgubin came to the US as governess to the Kennedy children in 1969; 25 years later she was with Jackie Onassis when she died. This book contains recipes and reminiscences from the home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and gives insight into the family life of America's most famous First Lady.
About the Author
Marta Sgubin is still very much a part of the family, cooking festive meals for Caroline and Edwin Schlossberg and their three children. Because Marta was born Italian, brought up French, and besides those languages and English, also speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Greek, she was helped in the writing by Nancy Nicholas, whose first language is English.

There are numerous quaint, notable as well as poignant stories Sgubin shares, as only an insider over a long period about which only a family insider could share. One such story concerns Aristotle Onassis' adoration of chocolate cake. Since Sgubin's cooking skills did not include pastry chef level baking at the time of an early on birthday celebration, she purchased a Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix for the occasion. He was so admiring of it, that he insisted on hording the mixes via regular shipments to Greece, so that they always would be on hand! The only reference to Sgubin's culinary training is to watching and learning from the chef on the Christina, Onassis' lavish yacht. Another such story of interest, also concerns Onassis, who, at Jackie's request, was the person who actually convinced Sgubin to accept employment with the household, as she had been hesitant to do so for a couple of years. On yet another, later occasion, the spirited Sgubin sought out a Sunflower from a local Martha's Vinyard farmer (which were otherwise unavailable due to a recent hurricane), so she could complete preparations for a family birthday celebration, according to family traditions. She describes with considerable humor, scrambling through the ruined flower patch, while getting all scratched up, to find a suitable Sunflower. She includes a copy of a note of thanks from Jackie, for her extended efforts!
The recipes are really quite good, wide ranging, with many superb photographs, most of which were taken by Sgubin! This is a book I highly recommend to share as a lovely gift for those interested in American history during the latter half of the 20th century, as well as for others who have an appreciation for aesthetics and fine foods.
