“Cooking with Loula” is the beautiful cookbook-slash-memoir of Alexandra Stratou, Athens native and classically trained chef, that centers on the recipes of Kyria (Mrs.) Loula, her grandmother’s cook. Kyria Loula had worked for several generations of the Stratou family, creating dishes that nourished the physical body as well as sustained family traditions and memories.

I first discovered this title on NetGalley (where I’ve been a reviewer for the past couple of years); as a huge fan of all things Greek, I was eager to dive into the galley (and later the physical copy). As I work full-time and have very little time for cooking during the week, I was hoping that the recipes would be on the simple side; luckily this is so, with short ingredient lists yet delicious results.

I love that not only does Ms. Stratou include pantry staples, but also includes other essential tips, my personal favorite being “Bless your food when you reach the point where it could turn into a success or a failure.” A lovely illustrated guide to essential tools and a guide to cooking with the seasons rounds out the introduction. The seasonal chart will help you choose recipes based on what is in season at the moment (and of course, if you can support your local farmer’s market if you have one, your recipe will turn out all the better for it).

And here is the major difference between Greek cooking and our modern lives: In Greece (particularly Crete), meals still revolve around seasonality. A tomato should only be consumed when in season, unlike the plastic tasteless varieties available year-round at American grocery stores.

Cooking with Loula is a book that every household should have. It is an excellent gift for people who enjoy cooking at all levels.

Loving to cook myself (wishing I had Alexandra's talent), I found Cooking with Loula exceptionally helpful.
Several key points about the book:

1) I love how the recipes are also broken down by time, day of the week etc, because it gives a realistic time of what you should cook if you are in a hurry, or whether you have plenty of time for something more "troublesome"

2) The way Alexandra has structured each recipe makes even the 101 Chefs (myself) look like Gordon Ramsay when they have guests over

3) The recipes are simply excellent - all my favorite dishes have come out exactly how I dreamed them to be.

4) I really like how the book is binded, because every other cook book I have closes whenever I open up to a page, and then I get it all dirty re-opening it. The spinal cord of the book keeps the book open for easy usage.

5) It's the best Greek Food cooking book I have seen -

Excellent Job Alexandra - Looking forward to your next book :)

I first read Cooking with Loula when it was Cooking to Share – in fact it was first drafts for Cooking to Share and recipes being tested. This book has since developed and been perfected, the name altered, a new path taken, but the energy and love that went into those first notes and that I tasted in those first ‘test’ meals, remains very much present and pulsating. Inside the first version of Cooking to Share I had written that what Alexandra Stratou communicates to us in her book is an “appreciation for bringing varied people together to bond and exchange over good food. Respect for our food, where it comes from, its context, its effect on our planet and on our bodies – the conclusion that if love, good energy and thought have gone into the raw materials… into the cooking process and the eating too, only good can come of this”. 3 years (and much cooking) later, I can say with certainty that only good has come from every recipe tried from this heart-warming book.
