Conway Twitty was a superb rock n' roll singer, but by 1965 the hits had dried up, and he decided to switch back to Country Music where he had started his career. He signed to Decca (later MCA), and had the good fortune to work with producer Owen Bradley. Bradley was a top flight producer, and employed some of Nashvilles best session musicians in his studio.
Conway cut some singles, but they received little airplay, and Country DJs distrusted Conways motives in recording Country Music. Such was life in the 1960's. That these DJs were wrong, you can judge for yourself as Together For Ever/That Kind of Girl was Conways first single for Decca. Its on the Conway Twitty Sings album, tracks 5 & 7, and not only is it as good as anything on the charts at that time, That Kind of Girl, written by Conway, is as good as anything Buck Owens was recording as well. Anyway, it bombed on the charts, but Conway kept going, and his version of Claude Grays I'll Have Another Cup of Coffee (Then I'll Go), is lovely. Conway finally made the Top 20 with Guess My Eyes Were Bigger Than My Heart, a Bill Anderson song that Conway takes over completely. Bill could certainly write songs, but it needed a performer like Conway to take them to a higher level.
All those tracks are on the Conway Twitty Sings album, and by the standards of the 1960's its a very good debut album indeed. Two songs were self penned, and the rest were well chosen songs popularised by other artists.
The second album Decca released was Look Into My Teardrops, the title track was a Harlan Howard song, so Conway was getting A-list songwriters sending him songs, a good sign, but one writer on the album is one Mickey Jaco.

This is a strong selection of Country Standards well delivered by the crystal clear voice of the late Conway Twitty.
