Conway Twitty was a superb rock 'n roll singer whose career took off from the late 1950's when he hit big on MGM with It's Only Make Believe. By 1965 however, Conway was no longer getting the hits and his career was going nowhere. Like many early rock 'n rollers his roots were in Country music, and it was to his roots that he decided to return. Country music however was a bit sniffy about returning rock 'n rollers, Jerry Lee Lewis was working the trick on Smash, but he was a musical genius. Conway was good, but how good? Conway signed a deal with Decca (later MCA), and went for broke.
This current release programme on Poker puts onto CD for the first time his albums for Decca, in chronological order, great sound, and with highly readable notes from Tony Rounce. On this release we pick Conway up with his third and fourth albums, originally released in 1967 and early 1968. He was in his second year as a Country singer, starting to get radio play, and he was looking for that breakthrough hit. It had been hard graft for him because Country DJs originally either ignored, or were very reluctant to play his releases. Conway persisted, and slowly he was getting there.
When you scan the track listing you notice the formulaic approach to album compilation that was standard at this period for Country artists. A few minor hits, and plenty of covers that had been hits for other artists. What could have been very ordinary in the hands of a lesser artist, are here transformed by the quality of the covers. They are very good indeed, Decca had wisely placed Conway with the producer Owen Bradley, and he packed the recordings with Nashville A-list musicians. Thus you have Grady Martin, Harold Bradley, Pete Wade, John Hughey, Hargus Pig Robbins etc. all in fine form.

A very under rocker who successfully converted to Country & Western.
Early country material that shows what a great performer Conway was.

These two albums on 1 CD, CONWAY TWITTY COUNTRY ( 1967) and HERE'S CONWAY TWITTY & HIS LONELY BLUE BOYS (1968), represent the early years of Conway Twitty in Country Music, every song is a pure delight, my favorite one is on the second CD, The Image Of Me, a musical gem written by Wayne Kemp one of the greatests classic songwriters ever in Country Music, I encorauge to Poker Records to reissue every Conway Twitty's albums on CD. All over the world fans should be grateful.
