But (BUT!) the PS4 version has a dodgy map that sometimes doesn't work properly, the frame rate drops when the fighting gets fierce, reading files after you pick them up is fiddly, the menus are jerky and unresponsive, and the mods and upgrades are so boring and unnecessary that they feel like they were added a week before launch.
Yeah, there's a lot to frustrate and annoy in Control, but if you have the patience and are prepared to put up with a lot of mildly annoying bugs and design choices, you'll find a lot to love in this imaginative, twisted adventure.
The only thing stopping this from being a 5 star review is the frame rate on a vanilla PS4, it drops substantially whenever you are in a big firefight (which happens throughout most of the game) although I hear this is much better on the PS4 Pro! Hopefully the developers will be able to fix this in a future update. Despite this, its a must play game!
Patches seemed to fix some of the performance issues I experienced on my PS4 Pro, but to say it ran smoothly would be a lie.
Buy when its price drops. It’s a neat little game that I enjoyed playing and I hope the DLC gives us a proper ending or at least a satisfying opening for a sequel.
The atmosphere of this title is great, the gameplay is varied and fun, and there is no handholding. You're here, you're the [redacted], get used to it. You're very much thrust into things from the beginning, the difficulty swings up and down in a way that keeps you on your toes and not knowing what to expect, even round famiar corners.
It won't often have you jumping, but it does keep you constantly unsettled. It feels like an early episode of the X-Files with a small dose of Legion. If you like quirk and imagination and, perhaps, not always knowing what the hell is going on, this won't disappoint.
Issues with frame rate when action gets to hectic. Slow load times and the odd case of bugs.
Worth it alone for the combat. Story and aesthetics are a great bonus.
Pick it up at any price if possible.
However, the minute things get heated with multiple enemies on screen the games frame rate grinds to a halt, almost freezing entirely at some points.
I'm not usually one of those guys who cares about frame rates etc, but at the minute this game is close to unlpayable at times.
However I'd personally wait to buy it on consoles until they figure out a workaround for the horrendous frame rate drops and screen stuttering/freezes found on baseline consoles like the PS4/Xbox One S.
Frame rates do appear to be more tolerable on the enhanced consoles but if you can't wait to play it and have a capable gaming PC, I'd heavily suggest taking that route.
