Product Description

Picking up immediately after the events of the first film, Phase II follows Riley (Matt Mercer), now infected and running out of time, as he attempts to find out more about the virus and its mysterious host. As he digs deeper into its origins, Riley attracts the attention of a Detective (Marianna Palka, Good Dick) who doubts his innocence, and BJ(Morgan Peter Brown, Absentia) himself, who holds the key to the virus-and perhaps the destruction of mankind as we know it, leading to a blood-soaked finale you have to see to believe.

good follow up to phase 1 does explain more but not all about the disease also has above average special effects. Well acted on the whole, fast paced, good make up and a really likeable lead character. My only question is will there be a phase 3 and can I pre-order. As did the phase 1 kept me on the edge of my seat. Dark, on times utterly stomach churning but well worth a watch. This is what fear the walking dead should have been. Not that I am a big fan of that also. This may be a lowly b movie but it certainly packs a punch would advise against eating when watching this movie. I don't feel it fair to add spoilers about the plot but in the doc's words this is one gnarly STI

Something has gone wrong with the story-telling here. Makeup is all important as it gives us the visual indication of the necrotic progression of the virus, and yet the continuity in the makeup is all over the place (decaying teeth in one scene, white teeth in the next and so on). This is unforgivably sloppy. Is this film about a sexually transmitted disease, or is it a zombie flick? The film is trying to be everything, and loses the focus that the first film had, in which you really empathised with Samantha as she declined. [Spoiler] The best thing about Phase II is the teaser at the end that suggests the doctor who examined Samantha in Phase I is in league with BJ.

I really wish that this film was as absorbing and as interesting as the first, but it just isn't. ('Marmite', as another reviewer mentioned?) It is so sprawling and incoherent that it comes across as a student film. Nevertheless, it is just about watchable.

Once again I think this will be a marmite reaction for most (Please check out the reviews for Contracted: phase 1). I was expecting a cheap rip off of the first with a different director / writer etc but I must say that this delivered! A tad more on the special effects and gross out front, probably a slightly bigger budget than the first and a little dark humour. Oh....and a higher death rate (Always good for the horror sequel).

Online reveiws and critics etc are mixed on this film but I am in agreement with one. This looked like a potential straight forward follow on / gender reversal of the first but was actually a good little escalation with an entertaining, but brief, ending leaving the door open for Phase 3. In that vein it turned from a singular character study in phase 1 to a progression of the plot in phase 2 with a bit more being made clear for the back story.

I felt that this movie, penned by Craig Walendziak, had a little more of an Eli Roth (He of Hostel and Cabin Fever fame) feel to it regarding the gross out and dark humour which leads me to suggest that he gets in on the action and takes us on the Phase 3 thrill ride. As I said regarding the first, this takes us into a franchise and Phase 2 ends leaving an open world scenario for follow on instalments to go in whatever direction the writer decides to take it!

Once again be warned... Marmite... I gave it five stars but others may not! If you liked the first then you won't be disappointed.

By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER on 3 Jan. 2016
Format: DVD
Riley (Matt Mercer) has unprotected maggot sex and contracts the necro-STD disease and passes it on to unsuspecting family and friends through casual contact. In this film we discover that BJ (Morgan Peter Brown) is the source of the disease as he is hunted down.

The odd thing in this film is that Riley takes a long time to go through his phases being able to infect people who become deathly ill overnight. The film consists of some pretty sick looking blood episodes, self mutilations, but a plot that is fairly stagnant.

There is a book title, "A Better You. Change From Within" that oozed with irony and a eulogy song that was no "Candle in the Wind."

Guide: F-bomb. Sex. No nudity. 3 1/2 stars
