5.0 out of 5 stars great release 25 Nov. 2014

beautiful trio compositions by one of the more under-rated jazz pianists around. what sets this off so nicely is bruninghaus allows the other musicians, markus stockhausen and fredy studer to take center stage. studer's drumming reminds me of john marshall with his mastery on cymbals. markus stockhausen is a phenominal trumpeter; with his fast and smooth notes. all musicians play off each other in a very complimentary manner bringing a very smooth sound across our speakers. ecm records puts out such quality recordings with their artists. i highly recommend this release if your jazz styles lean towards trios and trumpeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar Performance 21 Dec. 2008
By James - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
"Continuum" is one of the top albums of the '80s and a leading contender for best ECM release of that decade. The sound is extraordinary as is typical with many other Manfred Eicher produced ECM recordings. Bruninghaus' compositions are catchy and his keyboard work is exquisitely tasteful. The eccentric instrumentation is delicate and dream-like, taking the listener to a world beyond. Marcus Stockhausen's contribution provides rhythmic freedom and melodic expressivity. What stunning music but... where is Eberhard Weber?

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful musical adventure titled CONTINUM in six tracks 24 Nov. 1999
By Alejandro - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This time I want to talk about a beautiful musical adventure titled CONTINUUM, in six tracks:
Starring: ---------- Rainer Brüninghaus - Piano, Synthesizer Markus Stockhausen - Trumpet, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugelhorn Fredy Studer - Drums
Strahlensupr: (Traces of beams) This dynamic tune wakes us up, the day has begun it's urgent to make important changes in our lives, just listen to the music.
Stille: (Silence) This beautiful track takes you to the perfect placid place of your most beloved dreams, it's early in the morning, you must be ready to expect the unexpected ... maybe the love of your life will emerge from the lake or from the deep of the forest.
Continuum: (Continuum [it's Latin]) In this track Rainer takes advantage of his expertise at the acoustic piano, while Fredy paints the scene carefully. Then Markus takes us along with him, proposing questioning words: "Are we going ahead?" to answer his self (and the rest of us): "Yes, to a brilliant future".
Raga Rag: This track opens with a deep and enormous melody, the piano as a falling water, the drums as a steps carefully taken and the trumpet looking ahead. Then the three musicians draw the map: "This is the way to go to the place you always has wanted to be to spend all your life with your loved ones". Starts the trumpet (Markus), promising an interesting and daring path. Then continues the piano (Rainer), showing the beauty of the journey. Al last finishes the drums (Fredy), building an magnificent vehicle.
Schattenfrei: (Without Shade) Yes, we've arrived to a beautiful place, just sit back and relax open your heart and your mind to a whole new world.
Innerfern: (Inside - far away) The musicians ask you a last question to think about: "Did you realized that this beautiful place have always been inside of you?, All you have to do is free your feelings and trust your self."
Protagonistas: ------------------ Rainer Brüninghaus - Piano, Sintetizador Markus Stockhausen - Trompeta, Trompeta Piccolo, Flugelhorn Fredy Studer - Batería

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album 13 Oct. 2013

As far as I know Rainer Bruninghaus only released two recordings as a leader in the 1980's, "Freigeweht" and "Continuum." Both albums are superb and worth the modest investment of an MP3 download. If you're fortunate enough to find either of them on vinyl or CD for a decent price, which isn't easy, don't hesitate to purchase them.

Bruninghaus is a gifted composer and musician. His session work with Eberhard Weber is legendary. His melodies on this album are smart and vivid and electrifying. Each track has a cyclical feel about it, (to me at least), with great mood swings. Accordingly, the performers make great use of the quieter moments, a skill many bands lack.

The recording is exactly what you would expect from the ECM label; it's lush and spacey. As always, the engineering is impeccable. After 30 years, this album is still a beautiful collection that has stood the test of time.

"Continuum" can pump you up for a night out on the town or help you chill through a lazy afternoon. Highly recommended.
