The new edition of Thomas Merton s essays are representative of some of his finest work. The Merton Seasonal"
"The new edition of Thomas Merton's essays are representative of some of his finest work." --The Merton Seasonal
The spiritual and psychological insights of these essays were nurtured in a monastic milieu, but their issues are universally human. Thomas Merton lays a foundation for personal growth and transformation through fidelity to "our own truth and inner being".See all Product description

Merton is one of my favorite writers-He always gives one a great deal to think about. However, please beware that this second edition is not the same as the original 1971 publication. In the years since Merton's death in 1968, his works have been edited and republished. This may cause confusion and problems for any student of Merton. For instance, this 1998 edition drops five chapters from the 1971 publication on eremitical or hermit life. The '98 editors seemed to feel readers would not have a chance to experience this lifestyle and it was, at that time, no longer a burning issue in the religious order. Unfortunately, this is exactly the topic I was seeking, so I had to purchase the 1971 edition. To prove the point of confusion stemming from republication of his works, it's interesting to note Merton apparently did not intend to include the chapters on eremitic life in his original book; they were added after his death-Reader beware, but do not let this issue prevent you from studying with one of the great novice masters of our times.
