Product description
Product Description
The Contech Electronics ScareCrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler presents an innovative, humane way to keep pets and wildlife from disturbing your garden without the use of complicated traps or potentially hazardous chemicals. The sprinkler combines a surprise spray of water with unexpected motion and noise to create a safe, effective deterrent to unwanted visitors, helping keep your garden looking its best.
Safe, Humane Deterrent Helps Protect Your Garden
A huge amount of time and energy goes into keeping your garden and outdoors space looking great, so it's only natural that you want to protect your property from damage caused by hungry wildlife or local dogs and cats. But there are many reasons to avoid chemicals, poisons, traps, and hazardous electric fences, for example, if you have children.
Whether you're a dedicated organic vegetable gardener or a parent looking out for the health of the children and pets that play in your garden, you'll appreciate the simple, innovative, and effective water-based concept behind the Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler. It's also a perfect choice where fences are prohibited and for people who consider wire fences and similar visual barriers unappealing.
When the ScareCrow detects an animal it instantly releases a short but startling burst of water. The sudden spray of water, alongside the movement and noise of the sprinkler is designed to scare the intruding animals away. Animals associate this negative experience with the area and avoid your patch in the future. This means that you can effectively deter cats and other unwanted visitors from your garden, without disturbing pets playing next door.
Versatile and Broad-Reaching for Maximum Effectiveness
The ScareCrow is versatile enough to keep rabbits and other wildlife from snacking on plants and bulbs, to prevent dogs from digging up newly seeded lawns, to keep the cat from using your garden as a litter box, and to scare predators like herons and other birds away from your fish pond. It can also keep foxes at bay to help you protect your small animals and chickens.
The ScareCrow's motion detector is powerful enough to guard an area of up to 1000 square feet of coverage with only a single sprinkler. For added coverage, multiple ScareCrow sprinklers can be linked in series to guard larger spaces.
Efficient Design and Easy Set Up
Setting your ScareCrow sprinkler up is simple and quick, and doesn't require any special tools. In four easy steps it can be up and running. Simply install a standard 9-volt battery, connect the sprinkler to your hose, push the 17-inch stake into ground to secure the unit, and set the adjustable sprinkler arc to cover the area you want protected.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2013We love cats and have had many rescue ones over the years. Our garden is very cat friendly with lots of kitty houses, outdoor cat trees and catnip plants. Our kitties enjoy it in the day ( thus stopping their need to wander) but at night when they are locked in the local cats who aren't locked in come and spray all over our garden and even our electronic cat flap and un-neutered cat pee stinks to high heaven. Our cats became stressed at the scent of other cats spraying all over their territory so we needed a humane solution. I saw the Scarecrow used on a USA cat behaviour show to keep out unwanted cats. It's purrfect! We set it when our cats are locked in and sucess! No stinking cat pee all over our garden or catflap/back door or the rest of the garden. Our cats are no longer nervous going out in the morning and weren't smelling round the usual hot spots for pee. The back door and cat flap didn't drip of cat pee when opened so no need to clean it or the kitchen floor first thing at 6am every day. They aren't guarding the house at night either by pacing from window to window so they are much happier. Our 3 cats have litter trays and we even pay for an extra service to get the litter collected by the council once a week and hygenically disposed of. We are responsible owners and for that reason we get on with our garden loving neighbours but sadly other cat owners round here aren't so responsible. For cat owners the Scarecrow is perfect if your cat is locked in at night and you remember to only set it when your own cat is locked in and turn it off before your kitty goes outside in the morning. It is humane as my hubby tested it out when we first set it up and got wet but not hurt. The noise is loud so it will scare off any unwanted cats probably before they get wet as cats can react fast. Wish we'd heard about the Scarecrow a long time ago. It can be very powerful so check it does not overspray into your neighbour's garden but it has a lot of settings to alter the sensitivity of the beam and the strength of the water spray so you can cover as big or little an area as you like. It is battery powered too so not expensive to run. Fully recommend it to safeguard your locked in kitties at night.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2015This item has systematically eradicated cat mess from my front lawn. I was at the end of my tether. Since my neighbour decided to acquire three cats I have been taking at least one, sometimes two poos off the lawn every day. It was driving me mad. Before I bought the item I was concerned about how adjustable the unit would be as my front lawn is an odd shape and a public pavement runs close to it and I didn't want it going off every time someone walked past. My fears were unjustified, however as the range adjustment for the PIR is quite accurate which allows the area of activation to be controlled to whatever distance you need (up to a limit) and the water jet wetting area is accurately adjustable too. Since installing this item I have not had to remove any mess at all from the area of coverage.
I would say though, that the reason why I did not give it five stars is that the unit itself is manufactured in China and does not feel particularly sturdy or durable, neither does the build quality feel like it should demand such a high price tag. It also feels like it needs to be handled with care or it will break. In fact I have already suffered a failure of the hose connector fitting which has split, from me disconnecting the hose a few times. Easy to replace but disappointing all the same.
That said, if you are pulling your hair out in utter desperation like I was, I thoroughly recommend buying this item; it definitely works. Its also great fun to watch if your lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a cat getting soaked just as its contemplating leaving you its daily parcel.
Edit: Beware of leaving unit out and pressurised in below zero conditions. My stake assembly pipe has split right up the middle and I am having difficulty finding any one that sells spare parts.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2012I bought this product to combat a combination of issues. First I had a fox fouling my back garden, then as that happened more frequently the neighbourhood cats assumed my back garden was a public toilet for all animals to use. I grew sick of picking up the mess on a daily basis and decided to try the water scarecrow
I saw some of the youtube videos which showed it to be quite effective, I'd read the reviews on here a mix of positive and negative and thought for £50 ish I'd risk it. If it was rubbish choice it's my loss, if it failed as a product I'd return it at no loss.
Got it unpacked it and was impressed by easy install (literally screwing some pipe bits together and plug in the battery)
Plumbed in the hose pipe and no leaks on the scarecrow and that was using their parts (I wonder if the newer units have better fittings?)
Setting the detection area and spray is a cold and wet job but expected if you wanna get the right coverage and spray (I had to break out the wellies and waterproof coat), took me about 10mins to get it exactly how I wanted it but I have a small garden
It's been in over a week and no more cat/fox mess and it works a treat, I am actually very impressed with it. I still venture into the detection area just to trigger it for a little chuckle
A tip: if you have a small garden and want to stop spraying over the fence onto the neighbours property don't use the long pipe that connects the ground stake/hose inlet into the sensor body. Connect the ground stake direct to sensor body, it also makes detection at ground level more effective so you pick up smaller animals like cats
