Product Description

Having constantly been on the road for 4 years and enchanting crowds at Festivals as varied as Cropredy to End of the Road, Moulettes are steadily becoming regarded as one of the most exciting and original bands of the decade. Nominated for Best Group in Alternative BRIT Awards and Winners of Best Band category of Spiral Awards 2013, they now are launching their astronomically epic third album 'Constellations' into a musical atmosphere that rarely sees such accomplished musicianship, storytelling and song craft working so harmoniously together. By exploring new blends of rock, pop, classical and folk music they have commanded respect by renowned players and DJs around the UK, including Bob Harris and Cerys Mathews. The 'Constellations' sessions saw Herbie Flowers (Lou Reed, David Bowie), Arthur Brown (God of Hellfire), Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls), Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets) and The Unthanks join the band in the studio. 'Constellations' is out June 2nd on Navigator Records (home to Lisa Knapp, Bellowhead, Fiona Bevan, Paper Aeroplanes, Oysterband and many more).

To the uninitiated, The Moulettes may appear as another run of the mill folk band, touring festivals and muddy fields full of tambourine wielding hippies. Well, uninitiated, you couldn't be more wrong. Although there may have been one or two tambourine wielding hippies along the way....

Constellations is both a familiar sound, and a departure from previous albums. Familiar,in that we are treated throughout to The Moulettes' trademark harmonies, and the vast array of instruments that we have come to appreciate as the norm from this group (according to the album cover, I count thirteen); different in that, as the album progresses, it takes on a far darker tone than we have heard from The Moulettes before.

Themes include death, longing, betrayal, revenge and suicide - quite the party!! A far cry then, from the assumed tone of the album opener "Glorious Year": an optimistic, upbeat track in which we are assured that it will, indeed, be a Glorious Year. Sadly, via the haunting melody and matter of fact lyrics of "Constellations" we learn that all is not to be taken for granted....

"Lady Vengeance" is a superbly operatic, melancholic song with clashing harmonies, a bassoon bassline and lyrics which basically scream "SCORNED WOMAN".... enemies of lead singer and lyricist Hannah Miller, beware! We begin now to see the evolving themes of this album (and this is only my interpretation, and about as cliched as you can get, I'm afraid): "take nothing for granted; what doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

All tracks will stand alone on their own merit - any could be a single release. Yet together as a collection, they form an accomplished, cohesive album, showcasing The Moulettes' exceptional talents (both in the fields of writing and playing) and taking the listener on a journey not soon to be forgotten. Highly recommended.

The Bears Revenge was an exceptional album. I wondered how they'd follow it. How could they top it? Well, they have. It's a full blown masterpiece. It's perfectly structured at 10 songs. Each song is so different yet it works as whole. Wonderful lyrics detailing the beginning of music (Constelations) to drinking an assortment of Devil's juice (The Night Is Young). The Night Is Young is sublime and reminds me of The Millionaire Waltz by Queen. Land of the Midnight Sun echoes the theme from The Dark Crystal, but still holds on to its own uniquness. It comes close to being the albums masterwork. Arthur Brown adds his legendary voice to one of the greatest songs of the past 20 years, Lady Vengeance. A dark, disturbing trip and completely brilliant. Moulettes should be huge. Maybe their quirkiness does them more harm than good, but who wants them to become "normal"? If anything, Constellations is their most accessible album yet. They've shed some of the folk skin, but what they've created is a monster. A beautiful, scary one at that. I have a feeling that they're just warming up. The next album could well be their A Night At The Opera or Dark Side Of The Moon. They have it in them to make it huge. Musicianship is faultless, song writing exquisite, production is bright, but without being too clinical. Special mention should be given to Oliver Austin. His drum work is astonishing. Do yourself and the music world a favour and buy this piece of magic.

Came across these guys at Cropredy Festival last year and they were amazing live - incredible musicans, a vast sonic armoury, wonderful vocal harmonies, complex songwriting, intelligent lyrics, impossible to pigeonhole. This album is even better - psychedelic, folk, prog, rock, pop, even classical in equal measures. That they remind me of ELO, in that they throw the whole kitchen sink in, is a compliment! Buy!

The Moulettes have released their 3rd album and what an album it is! The band is very hard to categorise and when being asked to describe their sound I always struggle. This album doesn't help matters - there are so many musical ideas and styles that you cannot possibly pick a genre for the Moulettes. But why would you want to? So many bands rely on peddling the same formulaic sound to sell records but not the Moulettes - they are clearly striving to better themselves with each album and really hone their writing skills, each time bringing something out that will excite and interest people. With 'Constellations' they manage to bring all these ideas together and still have a cohesive album, somehow managing to have 10 songs that stand up on their own and yet as whole, create something that is so much more. I am currently struggling to decide which song might be my favourite, because as each one comes on, I decide that this might be the one. Their musicianship and lyric writing shine through and the production on the album is perfectly done, making this album a joy to hear from start to finish. I have had the album on repeat since I received it.

They have also put a lot of thought into the artwork and packaging, as the album is also an object of beauty, the images adding to the ideas behind the album.

The Moulettes have long been an absolute favourite band of mine and I highly recommend buying all their albums and going to see them live whenever you can. Enter the world of the Moulettes - you will not regret it.
