I have to say I wasn't immediately taken with this collection. It does have a certain monotonous feel. After a while however it seemed as though the self same monotony had become trance like and enticing.Overall an interesting experience I would venture, and one of a mysterious nature. It get better and better and better with time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different than most "metal", but worth it. 14 May 2013

This is not like most metal you're used to. On their Facebook page, Ides of Gemini say that their genre is "Slavic." That makes sense, and it reminds me of perhaps something like the classical composer Bartok who studied thousands of gypsy folk tunes from the Slavic regions of Europe and then used them as inspiration for his classical works (string quartets, etc.). Ides is a three piece band, guitar, bass, drums, and they make use of very sparse riffs and structures. The drummer (Kelly Johnston) doesn't even have a hi-hat on the kit, for example. This is pretty minimalist stuff, but it is part of the haunting and beautiful effect. The guitar riffs (by Jason Bennett) are simple and are punctuated by mostly tom-tom and bass patterns on the drums, which are then overlayed with bass and with melodic vocals (both provided by Sera Timms) that glide freely over the top. The overall effect is hypnotic and trans-like, haunting, and otherworldly, which all fits nicely into the "doom" genre. This one will take some getting used to if your ears are tuned to more "normal" metal. There is rarely, if ever, a true back-beat on the snare drum, for example. There are no ripping guitar solos. There is no pounding double bass drum. There are no sing-along anthem choruses. It could almost be thought of as gypsy church metal or something, because it has a sort of cavernous and almost sacred feel to it - like something mysterious is going on and you're not really supposed to understand it. This will surely confuse a lot of people, but if you're adventurous and want some diversity in your collection, add this one. I find myself drawn to it from time to time, as it is perhaps more "mood" music, and the songs do definitely grow on you. All performances (the musicianship) are perfectly good, and the CD liner notes do provide full lyrics. Production is perfectly good - clear and present.
4.0 out of 5 stars epic-scope, soaring metal/rock beauty 12 Jun. 2012
By Charlie Quaker - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Debut album from Los Angeles band featuring Sera Timms, singer for Black Math Horseman.
These are epic-scope, soaring metal/rock songs, led by powerful female vocals with a Gothic
tinge. The songs tend toward a thick, melodic feel with a dark, murky beauty and hints of the
occult. There's a pervasive sense of spiritual war that spills out in the deep, throaty roar of
guitars, the plodding drums and Timms' eerily gripping voice. Potent and haunting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Haunting 21 Jun. 2013

I saw Ides of Gemini open for Ghost BC at Mr. Smalls Theater in Millvale, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh. Too often opening acts are a trial, something through which to suffer until the real act takes the stage. Not so Ides of Gemini. Their work is original, dark and haunting. The next day, I downloaded Constantinople from Amazon, and I have no regrets. It's not the normal metal to which I listen, but then that makes it all the better.

2.0 out of 5 stars No thank you, not for me. 28 Jan. 2014

Just o.k. Has promise, but only one song was a keeper. They really need a new drummer, the lack of dynamics kept the songs from being interesting.
