A double bill of recent creepy films. In 'Constantine' (2005) Keanu Reeves plays John Constantine, a man born with a gift he didn't want - the ability to clearly recognise the half-breed angels and demons that walk the earth in human skin. Constantine tried to take his own life to escape the tormenting clarity of his vision but failed. Resuscitated against his will, he found himself cast back into the land of the living. Now, marked as an attempted suicide with a temporary lease on life, he patrols the earthly border between heaven and hell, hoping in vain to earn his way to salvation by sending the devil's foot soldiers back to the depths. But Constantine is no saint. Disillusioned by the world around him and at odds with the one beyond, he's a hard-drinking, hard-living bitter hero who scorns the very idea of heroism. 'V For Vendetta' (2005) is set against the futuristic landscape of a totalitarian Britain. It tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as 'V'. Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution in which he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

This movie shows the psychopathic people who are in control of a country and how they are abusing their power, as all psychopaths do. And although I am not endorsing the way that the revenge of "V" was handled, there is a sense of encouragement that one has while watching the movie.
I think that "V for Vendetta" is a very important movie in its own right. It brings to light the true face behind the mask of those who are in power right now in real life. It is a movie that needs to be seen by those who think that their governments have their best interests at heart. To show them that 'Big Brother' is already here.
If you haven't heard or seen V for Vendetta, pray where have you been. Watched this when it first came out and its now a cult film with the young (yes those are the masks the troubled youth wear on marches). For me i found it amusing that John Hurt plays the dictator if not cliche, as he played the complete opposite in Orwells 1984. Getting past that its a good storyline and it doesn't hurt to be reminded how shackled our lives really are - if you see the parallel.
Constantine improves immensely on bluray. Saw this on the tv and most of the effects were lost on me, probably the rubbish tv i had at the time. Bluray is like an aged whiskey. I love this storyline and now the effects. Alot of people don't like Keanu Reeves acting ability but this is a part made for him and it should have had at least another film from it (being a graphic novel first). I liked the fact that although the characters had some feelings towards one another the film didn't nose dive into a deluge of romantic non-sensity (yes I do like to make up words).
This was a good combination of films to put together and a great price too.
And WOW!! What a great price.
Excellent movie, I recommend to all.
As for the product, it was dispatched and arrived the following day, the dvd quality is pristine and it plays well without a glitch. Also came in plastic wrap as new. Always a good sign! There was a crack in the case but that was probably transit and I have spare cases anyway so...
All in all, excellent! Excellent buy, as described, excellent seller, postage, will keep in mind when making future purchases!!
WATCHED ON 5th NOVEMBER! Perfect setting!
Reeves works best I think when he's not the main focus of attention for the whole movie (like 'The Matrix', which is more of an ensemble movie that pivots round his character). The character of Constantine resembled musician Sting in the comics (deliberately) and was a kind of streetwise, hardass, morally ambiguous blue-collar warlock, and Keanu, bless him, just doesn't have the dramatic chops to pull this kind of character off. There are a few moments of unintentional hilarity when Keanu really tries to convince us he's a badass. Ewan McGregor would have been more menacing and probably more convincing in this role. At least he can act beyond being a talking, ambulatory 2 by 4 plank, up to a point.
Entertaining nonetheless, and Peter Stormare is brilliantly creepy in his short appearance toward the end of the movie.
'V for Vendetta' surprised me by how good it was. I'd never read the comic when it first appeared in 'Warrior' magazine in the early '80's, having been put off by David Lloyd's style of art (sorry David) and had no idea of what to expect, but the movie in general and performances all round were excellent (with an especially nice turn by Stephen Fry). The core theme of the movie, 'the people shouldn't be afraid of the government, the government should be afraid of the people', is just as relevant today as it was almost 30 years ago when the comic was written (in and about the UK of the early 1980's), probably more so.Read more ›
