I picked this book up for a little over £2 making it the best value bat book I have purchased to date. As mentioned elsewhere, this book was written in 1988 and consequently some sections are a bit dated however it still contains a lot of relevant information which I had not read elsewhere. It is easy nowadays to focus on one specific element of bat biology (i.e. tree roosting preferences, swarming etc.) without first having a solid understanding of the basics of bat conservation. This book sets out these basic details really clearly and at this price it makes a great purchase whatever your current level of bat knowledge.

Although now not a bang up to date book, this is a really great little book covering bat species from all over Europe and offering mitigation / proactive conservation ideas as well as a description of each species, its distribution and needs as known in 1988. Bob Stebbings is certainly one of the UK's greatest bat workers and although a slender tome is well worth the money as it's packed with good information. Don't expect glossy colour pictures, do expect lots of information, but bear in mind a lot more has been found out about bats since 1988!

Excellent even if dated

This is an amazingly comprehensive look at European Bat Conservation programs circa 1988. The book is written before the creation of EUROBATS which is unfortunate. As a reference material however, it is an excellent and very thorough look at the Bat populations in various European countries, techniques that are effective for Bat preservation, and threats to Bats throughout Europe. Very well done.
