The talks are presented through chapters, with various headings like "The Mind", "The Ultimate as Reality", "The Ultimate as Truth", and a number of the talks are repeated verbatim under different chapters.
The talks consist of similar questions asked by people who have not experienced the Self, and Ramana's attempt to put in words that which can only be known through experience.
Ramana thus points over and over again, that the experience of the Self is a natural experience, that the person gets to experience it through self-enquiry by tracing his thoughts back to the Source, the Self, which results not in a verbal answer to self-enquiry, but in experience of the Self, and once experienced, all that is left is to practice abiding in the Self.
In this practice, the thoughts arising out of ego, the bodily identification, begin to dissolve. In the beginning the practice requires conscious effort. Eventually, it becomes effortless, natural expression of the Self.
A person asks, "What is this Self?
Ramana answers, "Know the Self and God is known. Of all the definitions of God none is so well put as the Biblical "I am that I AM" in Exodus III. But none is so direct as the - "I AM" - The Absolute Is. It is Self, God.
Another one says, "Convince me of the existence of God."
Ramana answers, Realization of the Self amounts to such conviction."
Yet another asks, "How is "I-I consciousness felt?"
Ramana answers, "As an unbroken awareness of "I". It is simply consciousness. You are that even now. There will be no mistaking it, when pure."
Q. "How is God to be seen?"
A. Within. If the mind is turned inward, God manifests as the inner consciousness.
Q. "What is liberation?"
A."It is to know you were not born. Be still and know that I am God. To be still is not to think. You have lost hold of yourself. Turn inward. If the mind's source is sought, it will vanish leaving the Self behind."
"Self is beyond knowledge and ignorance. It is Self-luminous."
"Self lies beyond [hearing or seeing] - all alone as pure Consciousness."
"The consciousness within, purged of the mind, is felt as God."
"The Self is here and now and alone. It is not new and something to be acquired. It is natural and permanent."
Q. "How to get rid of fear?"
A. "All fear is nothing more than thoughts. If there is only one there cannot be a second (to be afraid of). To think that there is something outside ourselves is the cause of fear, but if firmly rooted in our own reality, then there will be no fear, no doubt, no undesirable qualities, as all the latter are centered about the ego."
"We talk of attaining the Self, of reaching God with time. There is nothing to attain. We are already Self-Existent. Nor will there ever be a time when we shall be nearer to God than now. We are now ever blissful, Self-Existent, the Infinite. Our consciousness is unbroken, continuous, and eternal."
"There is only one Self and it is fully conscious now and ever. There is neither past, present nor future for it, since it is out of time. Without the Infinite Power, God, the true Self, this incense would not burn, this world would not exist. This Self is in all forms. It alone gives them reality. Hence the Illumined One finds himself in all others, for he has found Unity and no longer perceives multiplicity."
The book Fred gave me was badly damaged in a house fire that we suffered in February. I replaced it for now with this digital version of the book. It Is well laid out and is not missing anything compared to the original that I had which I knew very well.
Thank you for making this available. This book is incredibly valuable.
I'm not going to talk about the volume itself very much though because there's just not much to say. You're rather interested in this already or you're not yet ready. The book itself is beyond the words that it contains. Trying to inject any more into it would be arrogant.
