Basic story..Set in a land ruled by an evil sorceress called Ocron and her cruel followers. Two warriors unite to bring her down but she too knows about them and seeks to destroy them.
Lucio Fulci's stab at the fantasy genre is truly strange but enjoyable and therefore a must see for fans of Fulci. Almost every scene is filled with smoke and often the camera is shone with bright sunlight, and whether that brightness was intentional or not it gives an atmosphere all of its own. It's a lively affair with much action as well as some of the most strangest looking creatures you're ever likely to see. Being a Fulci film you are guaranteed gory moments and "Conquest" doesn't disappoint as there are bloody set pieces throughout. Yes the effects at times are laughable but it all adds to the fun and it's accompanied by a pounding score by Claudio Simonetti from Goblin.

This one is a real curio to Fulci fans, who were used to his gore laden horror masterpieces such as Zombi, House by the Cemetery and The Beyond.

He jumped in on the Sword and Sorcery bandwagon here, which was booming at the time thanks to the Conan movies, and Conquest is definitely of that mould - though ultimately it's mediocre.

Basically a tale of two men who form a friendship and team up to defeat an evil priestess who controls a cult dedicated to ruling over the rising of the sun and sacrificing people to the priestess so she can eat their brains (presumably to keep her looks - hard to tell as she keeps her face hidden beneath a golden mask).

There are some typically cheesy 80's effects here - the magic arrows for one - though it's a cool idea for a bow if you're into that sort of thing. There are dog-men, a couple of gore effects here and there - one particularly nasty one is early in the film where a girl gets wishboned in fairly visceral fashion... The music is cheesily 80's as well - and if I remember correctly, was done by Italian musical legend Claudio Simonetti of Goblin - not one of his finest scores, it must be said.

The two leads are the classic chalk and cheese - one a young hero who looks like he was lost from Clash of the Titans, the other your older barbarian type, who has no love for men, but has a special affinity with animals and believes in his own moral code - if you kill an animal for a reason other than food, you're dead, plain and simple.

Typical of Fulci, the lines between good and evil aren't always so straight - and the heroes aren't entirely likable, but it's nowhere near as abstract as his horror movies were.

Most fantasy or Fulci fans won't be a fan of this, but there are worse examples of fantasy films out there, believe you me.

In the early 1980s there was a spate of sword and sorcery movies and mediaeval-style fantasy action films that were quite popular with cinema audiences. Films such as Conan The Barbarian, Hawk The Slayer, Krull, Deathstalker, Beastmaster, The Sword And The Sorcerer, Ladyhawke etc. The Italian film industry was usually keen to jump onto a successful bandwagon and so Conquest, an Italian/Spanish/Mexican co-production, emerged in 1983.

The slimline plot involves a brave young hero called Ilias (played by Andrea Occhipinti, a.k.a. Andrew Painter) who is given a magic longbow and sets out on a quest to destroy an evil woman called Ocron (Sabrina Siani, a.k.a. Sabrina Sellers). He is joined by another brave hero called Mace (Jorge Rivero), who wields a homemade nunchaku, and on their journey they encounter and do battle with various enemies including wolfmen (that look more like wookiees than werewolves) and strange zombie-like creatures. In one scene Mace fights with an evil duplicate of himself which may have inspired a similar scene in Sam Raimi's Army Of Darkness.

Ocron wears a golden mask and little else apart from a snake that is almost permanently coiled around her body. She has a super-fit body by the way but, unfortunately, when her mask is removed she reveals herself to be a ten-pinter! Ocron controls the army of wolfmen and also summons up a spirit called Zora, who can appear in the form of a man or a white wolf, to assist her.

I have to be honest, this is not a very good movie. In fact it is pretty bad. One the film's biggest drawbacks is its overall visual appearance. Virtually every scene is shrouded in a misty haze (or should that be a hazy mist?) which makes it a bit difficult to watch.Read more ›

A young boy named Ilias is given some leather armour and a magical bow which was once held by the god Kronos. After been given these gifts he travels to a far away land where the evil Ohkren plagues the land. While there he befriends a local Barbarian Mace who has a strange bond with animals and together they decide to put a end to Ohkren's evil reign.

Lucio Fulci decided to jump onto the band wagon that the success of Conan had started. This genre was prohaps perfect for him to utilise his talents for creating ghostly images and gory special effects.

The film was co-produced and filmed in Mexico which explains why the lead actor, Jorge Rivero who plays Mace was Mexican. He makes for a impressive hero who has no love for humans as in one sequence he shots a old man with Ilias's bow just for target practise. He also refuses to kill animals and instead will steal a animal kill from someone else when looking for food. Ilias was played by young Italian actor Andrea Occhipinti and he took is good as the young heroic boy who wants to save the people and kill Ohkren (future sword and sorcery star Sabrina Siani, who spends the entire film topless).

This may not be as good as Conan but it is still a well made and visually impressive film. The story is a little cheesy and the effects do look poor as the evil queens soldiers all look like Chubaka from Star Wars. The magical bow obviously looks fake when it glows blue but that didn't really bother me to much.

Action wise the fights are pretty impressive and mix some nice slow motion to good effect, but sometimes I did find it hard to see what was happening due to the fog, the over exposed images and quick moving camera work. Which did look cool in some scenes but it got a bit to much after while.Read more ›
