Not usually inclined to write reviews but I have to recommend this album. It's rare to hear a debut album that is so mature and well-formed.

Take a chance on new music and you won't be disappointed. The physical packaging and booklet is well worth getting your hands on too.

You don't get asked to contribute to a tour by a band as brilliant live as Simple Minds if you can't play, nor do you rouse Paul Draper from his post-Mansun lethargy to not only co-produce and contribute musically to your album but to then, in turn, be contributing to his long-awaited solo debut, if you aren't clearly an already fantastic musician.

In Edinburgh at the Simple Minds Usher Hall gig last year I heard Catherine live for the first time as her backing vocals added an exquisite edge to songs like Home and Real Life - and of course her ethereal rendition of Rivers of Ice which she played, accompanied by just her piano and Charlie Burchill's gibson, that sent shivers down my spine.

But this is just testimony to Catherine's musicality and I'll be honest - I was clearly going to show an interest in someone who has been feted by two of my musical heroes.

Recording as The Anchoress, she doesn't half match my expectations. This album is a corker - the opener Losing Year builds as it pulls you in with it's sleazy, distorted guitar line and simple, low mixed but almost tribal drumming underpinning Catherine's honeyed, emotive vocals. Then the pace picks up with the spiky What Goes Around. Doesn't Kill You (with another fantastic off-kilter guitar lick), the sublime, rocking, You and Only You (with Paul on co-vocals) and One For Sorrow could all be singles.

What a joy this album is!
I couldn’t wait to get hold of it after the tracks had been released 1 a month over the past few months – a brilliant idea as it gets you all revved up waiting for the full Monty.
Catherine has an incredibly striking voice – like no one else I can think of. The tracks are all extremely catchy, I’ve been humming “Popular” for about a week now! And the lyrics are very, very clever, scathing sarcasm with a sprinkling of humour thrown in.
The production is also brilliant, a nod to Mr Draper. I’m sure any Mansun fans will notice the one or two little production tricks that might have been used before.
All in all I’d say if you wanted to listen to something new give this a go – you won’t be disappointed. It’s my new favourite obsession. My only criticism – it’s not long enough!

After many trials and tribulations for Catherine and excellent record producer Paul Draper ,the story behind this superb album a novel in its self ,It arrives at last . Varied worldly and insightful /it is a gem , wont bore with comparisons ,it is its own wonder , like a great book ,with a beginning and even an interlude , good observations on the human condition and relationships , a bit more focussed than the variety of instruments used and keeps on the rails , to me a long awaited treat and worthwhile crowning achievement ,well done everyone and gorgeously packaged like a book collection . best tracks ,,one for sorrow ,,,what goes around , popular and my fave ,chip on your shoulder , for the more insecure listeners .

I'm not too good at writing reviews, so I won't go into depth too much and waffle!
What I will say, is that I came by the Anchoress due to my love of Mansun and following Paul Draper, who helped Catherine to create this cd.
It's intelligent, different, dramatic... sweeps effortlessly through styles, from brooding to intense to lighter, but always with such intensity. I can hear a mix of styles from female artists such as PJ Harvey and Tori Amos, but it's more than just a 'female album'.. lyrically it's a different 'take' on the usual love stories, and you feel the heartache through the smooth and wonderfully round voice that Catherine has. Her piano work on some of the more instrumental songs in amazing, and creates such atmosphere. I can really understand why Paul was drawn to her work. Without his input I would never have discovered The Anchoress, and now I have, I'm hooked. the more I listen, the more I am in love with it! I believe she is in the studio working on some more material, and I cannot wait to hear what she's been doing :) xx
