Is there a team of eggheads scribbling away in a locked room in the bowels of a media company or ensconced in the basement of a national newspaper? The answer to the last question is quite simply – No. The task of writing quiz material is generally outsourced to specialist publishing companies, who employ in-house or freelance writers, like me the author (Brian Crane). Authors of my ilk, provide professional and suitable verified quiz material to suit the client’s project.Over the years, I have written tens of thousands of quiz questions for many media companies. These include TV productions like “The Weakest Link” and Noel Edmund’s“Telly Addicts.” I have also written material for many DVD and CD-ROM games that you see in shops, among which are many football questions/answers for interactive FIFA World Cup databases. Educational material for schools, national newspapers and magazines for the travel and airline companies and breweries for their pub quiz clientele also form part of my CV.This book gives an insight into the writing business explaining the successes and pitfalls of writing quiz material, managing seasoned writers and vetting so-called writers, who think they can write verifiable quiz questions. Working to tight deadlines with demanding specifications and writing questions that client’s want is, in itself, quite challenging.The book also discusses and shows examples of how to turn mediocre questions into good, saleable questions. Moreover, and more importantly: How to earn a lucrative living while working with a computer at home, with the added bonus of working hours to suit your home life.
