Maynard James Keenan releases his 2nd Puscifer Album "Conditions Of My Parole".
Now with the first album, while it wasnt what i was expecting, i enjoyed it, and to be honest it was not as bad as lot of "Tool/APC" fan boys on the internet made out.
So anyways, what instantly grabs you this time around is the simple fact Maynard actually sings like he does in Tool/APC and not the raspy spoken way for the first, which was the main cause of uproar by the fans.
And with that alone is a huge step in the right direction, add the varied sounds of electronica, rock, country, industrial, alternative, and southern rock and then sprinkle them with some of Maynards think outside the box lyrics, we have a unique and fun album right here.

The best album of last year by a mile. Original, demanding tracks, no 2 are the same. Man overboard is for me the ultimate song on this album. Another excellent album from an excellent band. Pop idol no more. This is real music from real musicians with real talent. There is nothing contrived about Puscifer, just good old fashioned genius.

This album draws you in with pure, beautiful vocals and complex yet paradoxically simple rhythms and soundscapes.
Don't be fooled!!! Like the fairytale Fey Folk the beauty of these songs carry teeth. Promising sweet things, they lure you all too easily into the folds of their hypnotic flows. By the time you realise your error, it's too late; you are so completely drawn into the song you cannot get free. And as the album progresses it becomes almost compulsive. It lifts you into another place and then, grinning manically, it nails you there.

Simply stunning.

Puscifer (pronounced puss-i-fer if you're wondering) are best understood as a musical collective fronted by vinyard-owning camera-dodger Maynard James Keenan (of Tool and APC fame). Musically, it's a bit like a sort of "Tool does electronica" thing, although this description probably doesn't really do it justice. This second studio outing for the project is a clear improvement over the first - 2007's 'V is for Vagina'- which suffered from a lack of cohesion and an unfortunte preoccupation with female genitalia (although I guess I should have expected that given the title). There were some standout tracks in the first album, but many fans of Keenan's other musical projects disliked the croaky "spoken" vocal style that he adopted in many of them.

I enjoyed the first album, but 'Conditions of my Parole' is an altogether better effort. Each track is distinct and original - drawing on a range of themes and musical styles while still fitting seamlessly with the atmosphere of the whole. Keenan has returned to a vocal style that will be more familiar to fans of Tool and APC, although the anger and hard edge of the former band is mostly absent. On the whole, the album is a mellower experience than Tool, but no less powerful or soulful in places.

It's hard to pin down a stand-out track - I seem to have a new favourite each time I listen to the album (it definitely rewards repeated listening). Oddly, though, the song that diverges most from the general style and tone of the album is the title track: an out-an-out rock song propelled by a heavy (verging on filthy)bass line. It also has an excellent video - worth looking up.

All in all, this is a fantastically enjoyable album, and a great alternative for any metal fan wanting to take their foot off the accelerator every once in a while. If you're already a fan of Tool and/or APC then I would say this one's a dead cert.

First off I'm not going to compare this to Tool or APC, it's a pet hate of mine when side projects or new ventures get judged like that - take it as a completely new band, with an open mind and you'll enjoy it so much more.

I think the songwriting really shines through on this album, the tracks average the 4 minute mark and it's quite conventional in structure with the vocal melodies and powerful choruses really standing out. There's some fantastic contrast within songs, there's a real atmosphere built up during verses with slow electronic beds and beautiful harmonies from Maynard and Carina on the vocals before a chorus hits you with driving guitars, dirty electronics and the more aggressive edge to Maynards singing. That said, the album is anything but formulaic and song to song you're treated to different styles and sounds. In general I think the mood setting is amazing, it explores a mellower side to a lot of what Maynard is known for but still kicks in when it needs to and really pulls you along with the changes.

It's hard to pick a favourite song which is always a good sign for me, Man Overboard, The Rapture, Conditions Of My Parole and Tumbleweed would be my top picks but this is definitely an album where I won't think of skipping a track - they all hold up well on their own and it flows great as a whole too.
Give it a listen, then give it a couple more to let everything sink in properly and I'd be surprised if you can't find something to like there, highly recommended.

Having previously written puscifer off as Maynard's quirky, experimental time filler project (while being thoroughly put off by the crazy cd prices) I recently threw the dice and bought the mp3 version of 'conditions of my parole'. Verdict? What a twit I've been not embracing this band sooner!
This is a genuinely brilliant collection of songs, very well executed and quite uniquely presented. Those that know Tool/APC will be acquainted with the giddy standard of Maynard's vocals and lyricism and here both shine through as the clear backbone of every song, but despite this 'conditions of my parole' really delivers with it's arrangements and certainly left me craving more from the 'band that isn't'.
While this album doesn't rise to the heights of masterpieces like 'lateralus' or 'thirteenth step' it is every bit as valid in it's content, integrity, direction and artistic enthusiasm. Don't let it pass you by.
