One of life's pleasures is music one enjoys; this I enjoyed. It is an introduction to the music, it is bite-sized, one can listen with intensity or enjoy a favourite piece as you work, and Wynton Marsalis is brilliant.

I've now bough this album twice..once when it came out on "record" and again on CD.
I saw Wynton on the London tour just after the release of this album so I'm biased to say that it's the performance I try to aspire to. Sadly though the last performance of the Hummel I gave wasn't quite up to this standard. Down points... perhaps lacking in some musicality - Haydn 2nd movement. Plus points - superb (I'll type it again) SUPERB perfectly technically flawless cadenza - note the top C to pedal C's. (envy !!) and the semiquavers in the third movement.

The three valve schilke Eb trumpet and piccolo in A must of delighted Schilke as this album has shown all aspiring trumpet players what they should go buy... although stick a Bach C bell on your schilke Eb and it turns into a real humdinger of a trumpet.

Lovely album.. although I'd spend a little less and get the slightly newer "London Concert" which I feel has more musicality in the Haydn and Hummel (in E v's here the Eb version ) and certainly a lot more notes per £.

I'm not a great fan of Wynton's jazz playing which is too cold and analytical for me. This, however, is a different story. I am not qualified to say how good a classical player Marsalis is but I have loved this album since I had it on cassette years ago His playing seems perfect for the classical idiom and on the strength of this I have just ordered "Wynton Marsalis - Original Album Classics". I have listened to some of the cuts already via AutoRip (which is marvellous, Amazon, by the way) and I am not disappointed.

Just get it, OK? You have no need to read anything else about this album, just get it. It was bought for me as a gift and I have been completely blown away (no pun intended). The Hummel concerto especially is breath-catchingly good. Mr Marsalis, I always thought you were a very cool blues player, but this is just exquisite in every way

This is the perfect trumpet concerto cd. Beautiful music, played to perfection by a master of the instrument. Absolutely recommended.
