THIS ALBUM OF GREAT BROADWAY AND MOVIE SHOWPIECES CENTRES AROUND MR SINATRA'S MAGICAL RENDITION OF 'OL'MAN RIVER'A SONG HE SANG IN CONCERT FOR OVER 30 YEARS. FEW WILL FORGET THE RIDICULOUS SIGHT OF A WHITE SUITED SINATRA INNOCENTLY CROONING HIS WAY THROUGH THIS EPIC IN A MID-FORTIES MOVIE. THE CONCERT SINATRA VERSION COMBINES ALL OF SINATRA'S EXPERIENCE AND WORLD WEARINESS WITH A BRAVURA VOCAL PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTED BY THE DOUBLE GLISSANDO ON THE PHRASE "IN JAIL...I GETS WEARY" WHERE YOU WILL HEAR SINATRA'S VERY LOWEST BASS NOTES EXPOSED AND SUSTAINED.IT IS A STUNNING PERFORMANCE WHICH YOU CAN SEE REPEATED IN THE VIDEO/DVD OF 'A MAN AND HIS MUSIC ELLA + JOBIM'FROM 1966. THIS DOES NOT DETRACT FROM OTHER MAGICAL VERSIONS OF 'YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE','I HAVE DREAMED','THIS NEARLY WAS MINE','MY HEART STOOD STILL'AND THE 'SOLILOQUY' FROM CAROUSEL' ALTHOUGH NOT A LONG ALBUM TIMEWISE, IT IS IN MY OPINION,ONE OF HIS BEST, WHILE HE STILL HAD ALL OF HIS VOICE TO WORK WITH, AND BEST SAMPLED IN CHUNKS RATHER THAN AS A WHOLE.THE MERIT OF THE ALBUM (AND RIDDLE'S SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRATIONS) IS THAT SEVERAL OF THESE VERSIONS REMAINED IN SINATRA'S CONCERT REPERTOIRE TILL THE END.ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT TO MAKE IS HOW VASTLY SUPERIOR THE SINATRA VERSIONS ARE COMPARED TO CAST RECORDINGS BY TRAINED SINGERS. IN THE LATTER THE VOCALIST SINGS AT THE PEOPLE. FRANK ALWAYS SANG TO THEM.

This is not the 40's or 50's Sinatra. This IS the master displaying all the traits that kept him on top of the heap for the best part of fifty odd years. Forget the embarrassing comebacks and duets, this is pure excellence. CLASS is the only way to describe these 10 tracks.
OL' MAN RIVER is probably the best version I have ever heard, and like you I've heard a few over the years.
The other tracks are:
I HAVE DREAMED
MY HEART STOOD STILL
LOST IN THE STARS
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
BEWITCHED
THIS NEARLY WAS MINE
SOLILOQUY
CALIFORNIA
AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL.
With the exceptions of California and America the Beautiful, the remaining songs were on a vinyl album I have somewhere in the gander-bag.
It really is a treat to hear them on digital; who cares who the orchestra is, or what anyone had for breakfast [most of Sinatra's classic work was recorded at night anyway] just enjoy the total supremacy of a true artist. If you like Sinatra, ou will adore these tracks.

You may say "what a stingy album,8 tracks only" but what an album! Without a doubt this is the very best Sinatra recording ever made. For years the vinyl version was touted as a hi-fi demo recording. Now you have a cd version. Sit back and marvel at his versions of Ol`Man river and You`ll Never Walk Alone --- FANTASTIC!

My two star review reflects the poor playback quality of the LP I received rather than the content. This is one of Sinatra's best recordings with wonderful orchestrations and arrangements. Unfortunately although this "audiophile" recording arrived factory sealed, the vinyl surface was scuffed in areas, playback quality was poor with high surface noise throughout the disc and numerous "clicks" , for me this was unplayable and I was unlikely to listen to it again,it was returned to Amazon for a refund. I have a number of other discs from this manufacturer all of which suffer from excessive surface noise, which seems odd considering the high price. Surface noise was vinyl's Achilles heel but many of my much cheaper 180g recordings are relatively noise free and a pleasure to listen to. On this occasion I'll stick with the CD and avoid this label in future.

More than 30 years ago, I bought the original EP of this collection. Sadly, the turntable has long gone, so I am very glad to be able to buy the CD version. Outstanding tracks are -- Ol Man River and This Nearly Was Mine. Sinatra at his very best.

sinatra singing majestically. Nelson Riddles expanded orchestra and orchestrations. recorded on 35mm film for superior sound on mgm soundstage. reissued by concord from original film sources.some of the greatest songs ever written. this should have been a classic... but as good as it is (just listen to soliloquy and old man river) it could have been better. the sound on the concord reissue, although clearer with less hiss, leaves sinatras voice less warm in my opinion. never designed to be an intimate album such as wee small hours or no one cares this is sinatra concert style singing with full power and big endings. i cant help but feel we do not really hear everything sinatra wanted to achieve with this recording. perhaps an actual concert recording would have given us that? nevertheless it is a must have for any sinatra fan

This mid-60s album is one of Sinatra's most ambitious. Nelson Riddle leads a full orchestra in lush, symphonic arrangements of classic show tunes that showcase his powerful voice and emotional gravitas. His singing is less imaginative than usual, and he misses some notes (most glaringly on My Heart Stood Still), but his vocals do equal the strength and power of the orchestration. Any fan of slow tempos, detailed arrangements and emotional pop singing will want to attend Sinatra's "Concert."
