If ever we needed the late lamented Phil Ochs, it is now. His trenchant analysis of American imperialism, from a perspective of the Vietnam war, is all the more relevant today. Just listen to 'Cops Of The World' and it's like hearing a prophecy come true. To think people used to say protest songs were too topical and would have no application to future generations!
Utterly uncommercial at the time of its original release, this was never going to be a big seller, but Ochs' burning integrity and white hot anger at the military madness of the time still conveys a powerful message for today. The simple guitar backing to his sometimes shaky voice reinforces the sense that here was a unique talent with a flair for telling us what we already knew, if we would only acknowledge it.
Apart from the heavyweight political drama of most of the songs, there are two tender and poignant ballads, CHANGES and WHEN I'M GONE which show the other side of his genius. If only Phil Ochs were around today to pour scorn on those who talk of peace and bring nothing but war.

I have only recently discovered the music of Phil Ochs, and this album is probably the best introduction to his music that I could have hoped for, such is the quality of the songwriting and singing. Upon hearing 'Is there anybody here' - in my opinion probably the greatest anti-war song ever written - I was blown away. And then, as with my all-time favourite songwriter, Newcastle's imperishable Alan Hull (equally ridiculously underrated like Ochs, it would seem, and unknown to many), Ochs moves away from his trenchant (though often hilarious) attacks on imperialism and the hypocrisies of the political right, to more beautiful and reflective numbers like 'When I'm gone' and the heartrending 'Changes'. Ochs was clearly a very gifted and clever songwriter, and it is to be lamented not only that he was unable to bear the burden of his genius and the topsy-turvy times in which he lived, but that there is nobody of his calibre writing today. His music is a joy and I unreservedly recommend it.

This is a top-rate live album. Ochs sings and plays a number of songs that do not feature on studio albums. There is a lot of humour and by-play with the audience (as there should be in an album of this type). Whilst you would need to have some understanding of American politics in the 1960s to get the full significance of some of the references, it is something that is both easy to listen to yet challenging at the same time. If you like American folk music, you should get this album.

His humour and commitment come over as powerful as ever. Phil Ochs deserves to be remembered by a much larger audience
