I enjoyed this book immensly, it looks at various charcters that were active and made a diference in Spain early last Century. It gives a personal insight as how they were percieved and what their influences were, in a time when influence and respect was about al anyone inpower could hope for.Thouroughly enjoyable read, really got me to grips with the atmosphere at that time. Highly recommended.

This is an impressive book, ideal for anyone with an interest in the Spanish Civil War and also a model of concise biographical writing. The personalities come naturally to life on the page, and there are often unusual tidbits of detail that keep the reader going. It is not surprising that Preston is highly esteemed in Spain itself. His judgements are fair and founded on a deep knowledge of the period.
