Not the famous stuff but a rawer version of what was to come and esentially four albums for the price of one, so can't be too bad. I previously owned individual copies of these in vinyl so hadn't listened to them in some time but I enjoyed them as much as I had back when I bought them in the late 80's. The first CD contains the first two albums, of which the 1st album shows an early flirtation with prog rock on 'Movement for the Common man' but the rest is straight ahead early 70's rock. The second album contains the track that eventually became the trademark Styx big ballad in 'Lady' but the rest of it is interesting and continues on from the the first album. The second CD, containing the 3rd and 4th albums, is, to my mind, perhaps the most varied stuff Styx did with straight ahead rock 'n' roll, e.g. 'Rock & Roll Feeling', 'Havin' a Ball', 'Witch Wolf', through quite dark tracks, e.g. 'Jonas Psalter, and a number of ballads. I discovered Styx with 'Pieces of Eight' but have enjoyed most of the stuff they've produced since but if you like Styx and haven't heard this yet go ahead and buy it, you know you want to.

I first got into Styx after hearing to Kilroy Was Here on Vinyl (wow, i'm only 19!)and then bought the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. Those albums were great AOR Rock, but then i saw this in a HMV and decided to give it a go. Wow! Buy this album for just the beautifully remastered quality of these recordings, which would blow most modern efforts out of the water (are you hearing this Ben Hillier?). Styx II is probably the best album out of the four and contains 'Lady', a hit two years after this was released. All the cuts on this album are top notch and display a more progressive side that was eventually abandoned after 1975's Equinox. Buy this CD and get these recordings back into the public arena where they belong!

I have listened to this double cd set several times, and I have found many top notch songs, which are now Styx favourites of mine. When I first bought this, I didn't know anything about The Serpent Is Rising, or Man Of Miracles. I didn't even know those albums existed, until I bought this cd set. If you are a Styx fan, and love their classic albums (Pieces Of Eight, Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball), I'm sure you will find something on here that you will love as well. The song Lady is a prime example of early Styx in high form. I could list several more songs for your enjoyment, but I think you will have lots more fun discovering them yourself.
