Product Description

From the Back Cover

Albrecht Durer was a master in various media, but it was in woodcut design that his creative genius reached its highest expression. Here are all of his extant woodcuts, a collection of over 300 great works containing all the familiar cuts long treasured by the world's art lovers: the celebrated series on the Life of the Virgin, The Apocalypse of John (17 cuts), The Great Passion, St. Jerome in his Study, Samson Fighting the Lion, The Fall of Icarus, The Six Knots, The Men's Bath, St. Christopher, The Virgin in Glory, The Rhinoceros, The Last Supper of 1523, illustrations from Durer's "The Art of Measurement" and from his four books on human proportion, and many others, including much little-known material. This book is the only available source for many of these works.
Although sacred subjects predominate (the Holy Family, scenes from Christ's life, crucifixion, etc., the lives of the saints, Old Testament episodes), many other motifs are treated. There are portraits of prominent men of the ages, book illustrations (secular and religious), coats of arms, the celestial and terrestrial globes, animals, mythological and historical themes, etc. The plates are arranged generally in chronological order permitting the reader to view the development of Durer's art. From out of the gnarled figures and landscapes one can see the emergence of an individualistic style and skill unrivaled in this sphere.
An introduction by Campbell Dodgson and a 34-page textual guide to the plates by Dr. Willi Kurth discuss the evidence and controversies surrounding the authenticity of each work, citing the opinions of all the important Durer scholars; they also furnish the reader with the historical background of the cuts and of Durer's life and times from the years of apprenticeship in Nuremberg to the last works of 1520 1528.
All of the woodcuts are reproduced in excellent detail. This book is indispensable for the professional art historian and critic. To the layman with any aesthetic interests at all it will be a source of stimulation and satisfaction that only great art can provide."

the ink want nice...yeah nice and firm on the page, not a single word or image had fallen from the page. I loved the tone of white that the paper provided i thought that worked really well with the use of black ink so that my eyes could read the book and look at the images. it turns very well had no worries there. its a lovely rectangle shape no one could take that away from it. My only gripe is... (and now come on guys please dont hate me for pointing out this tiny little fault but....) when i throw it it doesnt come back. i dont know maybe theres a fault in its internal computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation 25 Oct. 2004
By Brian Okabayashi - Published on Amazon.com

This is the best compilation of Duerer prints I have ever seen. Duerer's talent is really downplayed in the avant-guarde scene today, but if you just look, you'll have instant appreciation. My only dissapointment was that the book does not include all of Duerer's Revelation woodcuts, which are my favorites. Anyway, I suggest you look into this book--it is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular talent 9 Jan. 2002
By Lesley West - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Albrecht Durer was one of the most talented artists the world has ever seen, and his woodcuts, especially those of apocolyptic visions are spectacular. This book reproduces these woodcuts faithfully, and the images are not diminished by the format of the book as is often the case.
These images are the stuff of nightmares - hell, torment, torture and death, and yet the images are so startlingly realistic as to be almost poignant in their representations. Enjoyt the images for what they are - works of genius. In addition the commentary is worthwhile, with interesting observations of Durer's life and techniques.
A valuable addition to an art lover's library, but also a fascinating book for anyone who is interested in genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars timeless evil 13 Sept. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The woodcuts in this book leap out at you with a ferocious and violent intent. I've seen the originals and the reproduction job here is nothing short of superb. It's hard to believe that such visions of the apocolypse come from Germany in the early part of the millenium. You can't miss this book! The engraving book is also way kool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Durer x Durer 10 July 2007
By Joseph E. Rade - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The visuals contained in this book by Durer are very very good. It gives you a great idea of what type of talent this man had. There is a very nice transition from his earlier work to the later noticeable due to the intricate detail woodcut by woodcut. If you are a fan of Durer, or wanted to know what he was capable of creating, I highly suggest checking this one out.
