Joe Satriani: The Complete Studio Recordings is a box set worthy of one of the greatest instrumental rock guitarists of our time. Joe Satriani is the guitar. Plain and simple. No one else has ever been able to play with such pizzazz, such fluidity, such timelessness.
Since the late eighties, the self-taught, multi-platinum virtuoso has been winning over fans and musicians alike with his groundbreaking style and legendary sounds. He has been around the world several times on tours of his own, as well as tours with Mick Jagger, Deep Purple, and hugely successful G3 summer tours and albums with fellow guitar legends Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and as part of the supergroup, Chickenfoot. He has been both artist and teacher, instructing such famous pupils as Steve Vai, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Counting Crow’s David Bryson, and jazz fusionist Charlie Hunter.
Now for the first time, all of Joe's studio albums are compiled in The Complete Studio Recordings, the most comprehensive collection by the world's best selling instrumental guitarist. The set contains 15 albums including the new compilation titled Additional Creations and Bonus Tracks. Featuring brand-new digital remasters for the best sound reproduction overseen by Joe himself, each CD is packaged in a replica cardboard jacket and housed in a clamshell box.

Yes, all the 15 discs are packed on cardboard sleeves (approx. 2-3mm thick) unlike Original Album Classics 2008 and Original Album Classics 2013 as I thought prior to purchase. On the side of each sleeve are printed names of albums and Joe Satriani's. The front and and back of the sleeves have exact same album covers and track lists (but not with good resolution. no big deal for me). And the 15 of these sleeves go in the hard (not easily breakable and approx. 5.5cm) cardboard box with 32 paged booklet containing words, photographs and infos, credits, musicians album by album. Nice going through it listening to Joe's music again. Back of the box has all albums small pictures. Front of the box, you all know. :-)
Everything is remastered again by John Cuniberti who has worked in Joe's almost every album. The man was always there for him. In original CDs or the previously remastered ones, I found the volume was not levelled compared to each other. On this one, the level is all equalised. All on the same level. That's what I enjoyed most.
For those who maybe wondering what's new here. The new thing (or maybe not new at all) is 'Additional Creations And Bonus Tracks' which has the following listing. Actually 'Additional Creations' was bonus EP (with 4 extra tracks mentioned below 5-8) came with Engines Of Creation, limited edition in 2000.

Basically, Joe has not written anything new particularly for this release as I was hoping for. No big fuss.
That's all to say. Little problem was the sealed box came with the booklet missing pages. Very upset. But now returned and replaced with new one by Amazon. I am lucky to have pre-ordered in time at less price than what it is now. This is small, cute, beautiful, stylish box that looks nice and sits next to Steve Vai's Secret Jewel Box on top of my CD rack. It came out the same time as Joe's musical memoir Strange Beautiful Music. The book is more of in-depth of making of these albums than autobiography. A companion to this boxset. I recommend to read it.
Rock 'N' Roll \,,/,
(Incidentally, drummer Neil Peart of Rush is a rare beast who manages to combine virtuosic instrumental ability [his playing can also make my hair stand on end] with a gift for often writing incredible, thought-provoking lyrics. A real poet at times. Subdivisions is a classic example. It gives me shivers just playing it in my head. If Satch and Peart ever came together that would be one hell of a combination. Just add Chris Cornell on vocals and Jaco on bass [unlikely] and I'd be in heaven. Come to think of it, let's have Geddy Lee on bass and call it a day. He's phenomenal, and more importantly, he's alive!)
BACK TO THE AGENDA!!!
If you haven't heard many, or any Satch albums, you owe it to yourself to buy this box set, ASAP! I strongly suspect the price will rise again pretty soon but even at the more usual £50 you're getting an amazing amount of great guitar playing and music for your money. Jeez, I remember one Christmas when I was seventeen. I pooled all my money together off my family and bought myself three Malmsteen albums on vinyl. (The cheap alternative to CDs at the time.) At £6.50 each (that's not including thirty years' inflation), that's nearly the price of this box set! We don't know how lucky we are!
Amidst all the greatness in this box set, I must point out that there is one fairly weak album here which was originally released as a double album, and that is Time Machine. What we have in this box-set is what was originally CD 1 of that double album and it is a collection of new material, rarities and outtakes etc. I feel that some of this material isn't a true indication of Joe's talent but in the context of his development as a guitarist and musician it is still a worthy addition to any fan's collection. I'm certainly glad it's included. (The other CD that comprised the Time Machine double album was a collection of live recordings and isn't included here for obvious reasons. BTW, that CD contains some truly awesome playing!)
Anyway, I've only listened to one album so far today which is Flying in a Blue Dream (a favourite of mine from when it was released years ago) and my hair has already stood on end about a dozen times. This album is one of the greatest guitar albums ever recorded. (In fact, it's one of the greatest albums ever recorded, regardless of genre. Period!) There are so many moments of guitar nirvana of the highest order my brain can hardly take it all in. Glorious! (Cheers Joe!)
If you are serious about rock guitar and aren't tempted to buy this collection then may I politely suggest you arrange an appointment with your GP in order to discuss the lobotomy you so clearly need. Unless, of course, you already own the albums!
Amongst other things, it's listening to the magnificent music made by people like Joe Satriani that makes my life worth living.
Buy it now, or die! (-:
