Product Description

Product Description

The Beat was formed in Birmingham in 1979, with members Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals, toasting), Andy Cox (guitar), Everett Morton (drums), David Steele (bass) and veteran Jamaican saxophonist Saxa. An important part of the whole 2-Tone movement, the band hit immediately with their version of "Tears Of A Clown", and followed it with three huge hit albums and a further twelve hit singles (more than The Speicals!), all included in this 4 CD clamshell box set. Songs like "Mirror In The Bathroom", "Hands Off...She's Mine", "Doors Of Your Heart" and "Save It For Later" remain radio favourites to this day. Also included on the bonus CD are seven special dub remixes and an annotated booklet.

So ... the perfect little box set for fans of The Beat? That's what I thought we'd get when I first got wind of this. The release of the deluxe editions of the The Beat's three albums in 2012 were most welcome and contain everything you could possibly wish for ... but ... if you're anything like me ... you might not be bothered about sitting through the DVDs again or listening to the BBC sessions and live tracks more than once. The perfect product for me would be, quite simply, a compact box containing all of the studio recordings on CD. I would define the studio recordings as those tracks recorded by The Beat in the studio which were released by 2 Tone and Go-Feet as vinyl records and cassettes during the lifetime of the original group (I clarify as there seems to be some confusion). Such a box set could be called `The Complete Studio Recordings' and would by its self-defining title be `complete'. This would mean it would contain the three albums, all the singles, b-sides and those fantastic extended versions (The Beat should be awarded knighthoods simply for their services to the 12" single). Disappointingly, you don't get that. What you actually get is what I'd call `The Beat: The Half-Hearted Box Set'. By my reckoning, The Beat released 65 studio recordings. This box set contains 53. 12 missing (and to not include the 12" versions of `Hands Off ... She's Mine', `Twist and Crawl' and `Jeanette' is ridiculous and quite possibly a criminal offence). The silly thing is, it's not down to a lack of space. You could fit ALL of the studio recordings on to the 4 discs and still have 71 minutes disc space remaining. The American `Complete Beat' box set is a much better product (though it doesn't need the 5th disc and is a bit pricey brand new). Sorry to moan but I love The Beat and this could have so easily been perfect.

For the price, this is a decent set which contains The Beat's three studio albums and a fourth disc which has a collection of non album tracks.

Because this release omits various remixes released during the groups lifetime, some may regard The Complete Studio Recordings as not quite complete. For those who want a more comprehensive overview of the band, it's best to collect the individual deluxe album releases - I Just Can't Stop It, Wha'ppen and Special Beat Service - which contain numerous live songs and remixes which are not present on this boxset.

But since the individual releases will probably give many people more Beat then they could ever need, this boxset is a more concise and cheaper alternative - although for anyone who is looking for an introduction to the group I'd recommend You Just Can't Beat It : The Best Of. Currently on sale for £5.00 it has virtually all the tracks (bar about half a dozen) featured on The Complete Studio Recordings, so is the perfect way to sample the brief recording career of a great band.

What blasts you most about relistening to Birmingham’s THE BEAT is the sheer Pork Pie Hat nuttiness of it all. Still fresh – still kicking – still sounding like you’re 18 – this music reeks of bopping up and down like a demented fool in a nightclub or a local hall or a cool city bar – completely lost in that irrepressible and fabulous rhythm - sweating like a Sicilian Ethics Teachers in a Vatican confessional. God were these guys good. "I Just Can’t Stop It" is damn right – because this is music that makes you feel young.

Here are the finite details… UK released 12 May 2014 (20 May in the USA) - "The Complete Studio Recordings" is a 4CD Box Set on Edsel EDSB 4013 (Barcode 740155401337) and breaks down as follows…

Disc 1 (36:28 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 12 are their debut album "I Just Can't Stop It" – released May 1980 in the UK on Go Feet Records BEAT 001 (it reached No. 3 on the Album charts).

Disc 2 (39:57 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 12 are their 2nd album "Wha'ppen?" – released May 1981 in the UK on Go Feet Records BEAT 3 (it also reached No. 3).

Disc 3 (39:34 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 12 are their 3rd album "Special Beat Service" – released September 1982 in the UK on Go Feet Records BEAT 5 (it reached No. 21).

Disc 4 is a BONUS ALBUM (73:08 minutes):

Absolutely fabulous songs and so evocative of my growing up in 80's Britain. Such talents that deserve to be heard, far and wide.
