Top Customer Reviews

Format: Audio CD
This is not really a review. Just a notice that this three CD/ one DVD box set contains, at a price break, all of Elliot Carter's masterful string quartets previously released on single CDs by the marvelous Pacific Quartet: Carter: String Quartets Nos. 1 & 5 & Elliott Carter: String Quartets Nos. 2, 3 and 4. And a third CD that contains ten varied pieces played by members of the New Music Concerts Ensemble conducted by Robert Aitken: Elliott Carter: 100th Anniversary Release - Mosaic, Dialogues, Enchanted Preludes, Scrivo In Vento (CD + DVD). The latter jewel box also contains a DVD of a conversation with Carter and Aitken recorded in Toronto in 2006, plus excerpts of the works on the accompanying CD .

I would urge you to click on the links I've provided for the single issues in order to read the reviews, especially those by Robin Friedman.

This is a necessary issue if you don't already have the single issues of these works. The Pacifica Quartet is surely one of the best groups around these days and Carter's quartets are nonpareil.

Scott Morrison
