I'm glad I bought this because I love embroidery in all forms and needed a good reference book (thought this would be The One, it's not); with this title just about every stitch is taught and pictured. However, this book could have been laid out much better so I downrated it by one. Only one, though because this book has beautiful photographs and although the text doesn't accompany the photos, it is well written and easy to understand. It includes some stitches I've never thought of, like sisha (the art of embroidering mirror bits onto fabrics).

Then again, the text is not instructional anyway, but informational - tells you a few tips on the use, characteristics, and some history of the stitch but no 'Bring your needle up from Point A...' - for that you need to figure out the stitching path from the admittedly excellent photos on the next page.

Perhaps I should have rated this a 3* but the photos are very good and I won't have any trouble using the book - but a newcomer to embroidery will with this book. A better encylopaedia of stitches especially for newcomers would be the fantastic The Complete Encyclopedia of Stitchery, by Mildred Graves Ryan (available used and new here on Amazon).

All said, I would likely buy this again but the Ryan book is my next purchase to replace the lost copy, and will be my No1 go-to.

Wonderfully and clearly illustrated for newcomers like me, especially as I am also trying to teach my grandchildren other skills. It was recommended to me by an ex-teacher and I was lucky enough to access it for only 1p! Amazing all round.

An excellent book for all levels of stitching. Good detail and illustrations. As a complete beginner, this was just what I was looking for - if I ever manage to cover all aspects of embroidery included in this book, it will be amazing.

I found this book really useful when doing one of my first self-led textiles projects at college. It lists hundreds of stitches, each getting more complicated as the book progresses. Each stitch has its own little description, and an extremely clear photograph showing bright stitches on a white background. I think this book is useful for everyone, as it shows both simple beginners stitches and more complex stitches.
