I would recommend reading one complete story at a time, in whichever order you prefer. The length of time to read each story varies from 10-30mins. I started with the famous 'Black Cat' & 'The Tell-Tale Heart', then 'The Cask of Amontillado' as an introduction. I enjoyed each and look forward to more, however I will use this as both a reference book and a story book.
You can understand where the horror readers of today have taken their inspiration. No doubt they have studied each and every one of his stories.
This contains all of Poe's short stories. It does not contain his poetry. I'll leave that for another time.....
I am now enjoying them all over again, thanks to this excellent Delphi edition.
I now have many of Delphi's editions of the classics, which are superb value, and highly recommended.
Mercifully, though The Pit and the Pendulum and such stories skirt on what we now call 'Horror', they are not so much a celebration of visceral and bloody encounters with the body and, where there is blood or carnage, it suits the context.
I wouldn't recommend reading some of the stories if already feeling depressed and, for me, some of the early stories like "Four Beasts in One" and "The Devil in the Belfry" tended to leave me gloomy. Perhaps, though, this is partly the success of Poe to affect the reader.
I liked being able to click through to the commentaries on each work.
