Tony Bennett is still recording at the age of 85 plus. Mainly duets. This recording from the 50's is nominally accorded to his relationship with Count Basie. I had the pleasure of seeing them together in London in the early 1970's. Although Basie is at piano on most songs, laid back as usual, the arrangements are mainly due to Bennett's musical director and piano player, Ralph Sharon who also is on piano on some recordings, who clearly understood where Tony's immense talent could be produced at peak level. Bennett can sing in small company notably duetting with Bill Evans, but his phrasing and vocal range are exemplified in a big band setting equally. Listen to 'Just In Time','Solitude', 'Firefly', 'Lost In a Song'. I could go on. This singer is up there with Sinatra, Torme, Nat Cole (on a personal level Matt Monro) but has outlived them all, although the legacy of their recordings are immortal. In the 1950's he was arguably at one of his many peaks. The voice is fresh and he, as always, exudes charm and deep involvement to engage his audience and listeners.
Questions can be raised as to whether he was a 'Jazz Singer', but that can be applied to most. My opinion is he could swing either way. Whatever, this is highly enjoyable singing and band support at the highest level and highly recommended. Almost 75 minutes of a man of song and talent at his best at a giveaway price with superb Basie band support at their very best with full blow-out sound. Full discography included. Excellent sound. The bonus tracks feature the Basie band without Tony Bennett.
