In February 1969 the Clarke Boland Band played an incendiary two week residency at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho. Everyone who saw it will never forget. It is our good fortune that one of the evenings was recorded. I bought the two vinyl albums from that gig as soon as they were released and have played them to death since then. They have now been re released on this single CD and for me it's Christmas come early.
Make no mistake this is one of the great big bands and features some of the cream of American and European talent, and this album shows them at the top of their powers, and album is both exiting and satisfying in equal amounts.
The album comes as a digipak with all the original sleeve notes and photographs and the sound is excellent.
If you care about jazz and especially big band jazz you NEED this album in your collection, I can promise you will not be disappointed.

My first encounter with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band was through borrowing one of their studio albums from my local library back in the very early 1970s. I was then curious how a European musician and arranger could interest not only top musicians from Europe but Brits AND some Americans (obviously Clarke was living in Europe by this time).

If you have never heard this band you will see why it continued to attract the top players. Boland's incredible arrangements are played with so much verve and swing it will put a smile on your face. You do not often hear two drummers with a big band. In addition to Clarke, there is probably Britain's top drummer Kenny Clare. Ronnie Scott (who is also on the CD) once said that the KC/FBBB was the best one he had ever played in. Here the band is live, recorded back in 1969 in what was originally on two separate LPs. The sound quality is fantastic and the whole experience will make you feel very happy. To have been there the night this was recorded would have been incredible. I cannot recommend this CD enough.

This album was recorded in concert while the sixteen piece "international" band was in residency at Ronnie Scott's in 1969. This swinging, driving band was co-led by Frenchman Francy Boland (who wrote the majority of the music) and American Kenny Clarke, by now resident in Paris (and who also wrote a couple of the tracks) comprised musicians from many countries e.g. From Britain: Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, Ron Mathewson and Kenny Clare, from America: Johnny Griffin, Sahib Shabib, Idrees Sulieman plus assorted europeans.
There are thirteen varied tracks on this CD.
The music is typified by strong arrangements and unison playing as well as the solos.
For those unfamiliar with this exciting band, I'd liken the style to that of the Buddy Rich Big Bands rather than that of either Ellington or Basie.

Bought the vinyl in 1969. Wonderful band. Huge energy. Would have been great to actualy be there. Not sure about the two drummer model, gives great energy but makes the sound a bit messy. Where on earth can you see something like this now?

Live at Ronnie Scotts in London is a gem. The Clarke Boland Big Band = CBBB was a band that had only ten years of life. (1960 - 1970 approx) A mixture of expatriots and European musicians who came together to play live or record. Francy Boland (from Belgium) was the composer mostly and Kenny Clarke the drummer and co leader. Some of the band members on this occasion were not well known but the results are in the listening. The energy and the communication that happens here is unbelievable. Johnny Griffin,Ronny Scott,Sahib Shihab,Idrees Sulieman Benny Bailey are just some of the twelve member band. The unique history of the band can be found in the essays by Gene Lees' "Singers & The Song" and is titled 'Journey To Cologne'. I highly recommend this cd with over 70 mins of amazing jazz and it does not disappoint. The first track 'Box 703,Washinton DC' takes off at a ripping pace and has the audience roaring at the end. The sound is fine but remember it was recorded in Feb, 1969. And I want to add that every book by Gene Lees is worth reading as he was a jazz affictionado and the above book I have mentioned is fascinating. - Pilgarlic

The prior reviews indicated this was great. this band is so solid, swings so hard,--making 2 drummers work so well. You can feel the response between band and croud. Solos are great. This is about as good as a big band can get. Aeeper and a disc that should be in every big band collection
HASH(0x8d2c2570) out of 5 stars Too much soloing, not enough band !!! 1 Feb. 2015

Exemplary big band performance but the problem with this is there is NOT ENOUGH of the band in it's fullness on this record. The solos go on too long. Want to hear this big band perform with less solos. However when the band kicks into overdrive there is nothing like it on the planet.
