Product Description

Product Description

The fifth volume of this popular series of the Complete Psalms of David contains Psalms 68 to 77. This volume from the superb cathedral choir in Lincoln is directed by Aric Prentice and the organ is played by Colin Walsh who treats us to a masterclass in accompaniment to exquisite psalm singing. All the chants, as with previous volumes from Exeter, Salisbury, Liverpool and Peterborough are new to the catalogues.

Along with the King James Bible and Shakespeare, Coverdale's translation of the Psalms of David - included in the Book of Common Prayer - is surely one of the most significant English texts. Anglican chant (the method used by Church of England cathedral and collegiate choirs of singing the psalms) is a distinctive type of choral music unique to the English cathedral music; it's basically a way of harmonising the original plainsong psalm-tones and making them a lot more interesting for the listener. The interest is further enhanced by colourful organ accompaniments which add even more variety.

This disc showcases one of the finest English cathedral choirs alongside one of the finest English organists, playing one of the finest English organs (the Lincoln Cathedral Willis organ). The singing is first rate, with a particularly strong, pure treble sound. For aficionados, Colin Walsh's accompaniments are pure gold, making this CD a must-buy for lovers of English cathedral music. Aric Prentice's direction of Lincoln Cathedral Choir results in a highly colourful and interesting interpretation of the psalms, with chants different to those recorded on the previous set of psalm discs from the Priory label.

Due to the quality of this disc, the next volume in the series is also from Lincoln, and features Lincoln's similarly talented Charles Harrison playing the organ and is worth looking out for.

If you love Anglican psalmody, then this is an absolute must. Beautifully recorded, wonderfully performed, and featuring some of the best organ psalm accompaniments that you will ever hear, I can't recommend this highly enough.

After several hearings I would give this six stars if I could. I love the way the choir allows extra space between the two parts of each verse. These are thoughtful, prayerful performances. Aric Prentice's direction is ideal. Colin Walsh's organ accompanment is outstanding. (I was privileged to hear him play in Wanganui, New Zealand in 2006)

This is incorrectly listed. It's listed as Lincoln Minster School Chamber Choir, when in fact it is Lincoln Cathedral Choir. It also lists Charles Harrison, when in fact the organ is played by Colin Walsh.
