I bought this course because I want to learn European portugese. I found it quite useless, due to the mix of european and brazilian portugese. It's hard enough for beginners to learn one of the versions, and here it's mixed with brazilian and european portugese within the same dialogues. That makes it harder to learn and remember new words and phrases. It's also difficult to use the audio alone, for instance in the car, because you need the book to keep track of what's brazilian and what's european. I ended up buying another course.

I recently decided to take up learning European Portuguese, but found that most learning materials seem geared towards the Brazilian version. I bought this on the strength of its reviews. It is well laid out with short exercises to test your knowledge. However I find the mix of Portuguese and Brazilian dialogues confusing. Having learnt a bit of Spanish in the past I am struggling with pronounciation, and would have much preferred all dialogues to be in the European version, with more repetition. It is better that 'Collins Speak Portuguese' though, which has inaccurate phonetic transcriptions, and lots of words and phrases that you don't have the chance to listen too.

If anyone anyone can recommend a European Only course, with accurate phonetic transcriptions, and plenty of audio material to listen to, please let me know.

I had been looking for a European Portuguese course and most of the courses I found in Amazon were for Brazilian Portuguese - which is quite a bit different from European Portuguese, particularly in the pronunciation. The majority of European Portuguese courses are very basic and I had already completed the Linguaphone PDQ course and wanted something that went further into the language. The description of 'Teach Yourself Complete Portuguese' sounded ideal - it promised to take one to CEF level B2 (A level standard). It covers the same grammar and vocabulary over a similar number of units to the Linguaphone Portuguese Complete CD course, but cost 20 something pounds, as opposed to the £200 of the Linguaphone course. On a positive note it does cover the main grammar and offers a good range of vocabulary. the author obviously knows what she is talking about and explains things well with lots of examples. She also includes cultural information.
On a negative note the book offers a confusing mix of European and Brazilian Portuguese and I can't image learners of either type of Portuguese being satisfied. It is very frustrating as a false beginner/elementary level student who is struggling with difficult sounds of Portuguese to be given two very different pronuncations of the same word. There are so many Brazilian Portuguese courses on offer it would have been good if Manuela Cook had written this as a European Portuguese course. My other major complaint is that the course promises to take one to B2 but the level of vocabulary in the later reading texts never reach that level and the exercises are very simple right up to the last unit.

A good effort but there are several weak points and discrepancies which I feel I can make as a trained language teacher already speaking fluent Spanish and good French and have taught myself Italian. If you are not naturally gifted at languages and only want this to help you learn basic holiday Portuguese, this book is not for you; there are plenty others more suitable eg. BBC Talk Portuguese. However if you have mastered basic Portuguese such as in the BBC book then this book provides a good revision and takes you on much further. Be prepared to be immersed in complicated grammar from early on. My main gripe is the mixture of Portuguese Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. Although the author says that you can choose which to use/copy, the very fact that both are on the audio together and mixed up can be very off-putting. It would have been far better to have separate audios for European and Brazilian Portuguese. I also agree with other reviewers who complain about the exercises having inaccurate and confusing answers. Finally having researched other alternative courses (especially for Intermediate and Advanced European Portuguese) this book seems to be one of the better ones of a poor overall available selection,

I wanted to learn some basic language to use in PORTUGAL
It is confusing to have the mixture of both European as well as Brazilian
Would have been less confusing = easier to learn if this were produced as 2 separate versions .
Or especially for the recordings if there was an option to choose which voices to be played.

There are Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese courses, but we also need a course for Portuguese wherever you want to use the language in the Portuguese-speaking world. That’s what Complete Portuguese is about, it fills the gap.
Complete Portuguese fills the gap at different levels. The course starts off quite easy with hardly any grammar, for a first time short visit (holiday or work) to a Portuguese-speaking country. Then gradually it gets more complex pushing your level up as you go along and the last units are for those who are looking to have enough Portuguese to find employment and buy a home in a Portuguese-speaking country.
This course is something I use with my students; and I am also pleased to recommend it as a self-learning tool for the independent learner.
