About the author

Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.
Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.
At Marvel, he's written runs on books including THE UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR, YOUNG AVENGERS, IRON MAN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, STAR WARS, DOCTOR APHRA and DARTH VADER.
Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.
He is working on other things.
In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.
He once played records for DMC to rap over.

In 2005 I was in the hospital for seven months. I came home a wreck: physically weak, spiritually defeated. For over a year I was an old man at thirty-seven. Then I discovered the magic in music. Listening to the music of the young, the passionate, the believers... it rejuvenated me. Music is magic, and that's what Gillen and McKelvie show in this book, but that is only the premise. Taking it past that and into the lives of the phonomancers who live that truth is where Phonogram shines. The back of the hardback asks "Has a song ever changed your life?" Well, Phonogram is the book that is the song that changed my life. Don't pass up a chance to let it do that for you.

I'm simply not able to be objective here. This is a series that's very very very important to me, and having it as a collected set (and with all of the uncollected b-side side stories as well) is a big darn deal.
The one thing that's causing me to dock it a star is that it doesn't have the glossaries and other "thinkin' about stuff" essays from either the individual issues or the collections. Those really gave a great insight into what went into creating this, both process-wise as well as lived experience.
You will note that, having docked it a star, it's at five stars. That's very deliberate on my part.
