Filmed at California's Monterey festival in mid 1967 at which most of the new San Francisco bands performed, "Monterey Pop" captured the feel of the artists and, equally importantly, the audience at an event that catapulted the West Coast onto the international stage. Problem was that for various reasons, including poor playing & camera-work, a large number of these bands never made it into the released version, leaving much of the film dominated by the more established & "professional" UK & US groups such as the Who, Eric Burdon & the Animals, the Mamas & Papas and Jimi Hendrix. But... no matter, because the contributions from Jefferson Airplane (and their superb lightshow lifted straight from the San Francisco ballrooms), Country Joe & The Fish (whose rendition of "Section 43" is a near perfect insight into "hippiedom"), Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin at her peak) and Ravi Shankar provide one of the few visual records of the San Francisco music scene at the time.
So, if you're interested in finding out what was happening see the original film. But if, like me, you already have it, or if you're just more curious, then this expanded 3 disc DVD edition is just about all you could ask for, and probably all you're ever going to get. Sure, the film quality on several of the additional sequences is poor but hey, you get a further two hours of performances - including Al Kooper, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield (with David Crosby & without Neil Young), the Association, Laura Nyro and Electric Flag, none of who were included in the original film, and...

So is it worth 5 stars? More! It doesn't come any better than this. This is what I wish they had done with the Woodstock film and Rolling Stones' Altamont experience, though they are both fairly well documented on the Woodstock DVD (director's cut), The Woodstock Diaries DVD and on the Criterion Collection Gimme Shelter DVD. The Complete Monterey Pop Festival DVD is not only a film of historic importance, the scenes of the outrageous hippies as compared to the down to earth locals, catching the atmosphere of the sixties flower power, but above all it is the performances that represent the core of the film, the music is fantastic!
If you want to go all the way, you'll probably want to get the four CD box of the festival as well- Here you will find additional performances, including Scott McKenzie's San Francisco (be sure to wear a flower in your hair) and Steve Miller Band's Mercury Blues as well as more from the other artists' performances on the festival. This box comes in a vinyl sized box and has a colour booklet superior to the one supplied with the DVD set. Still if you had to choose between the two I'd go for the DVD set, because in this case it is true as they say - every picture tells a story - and this is a great one!

This terrific DVD set is a history lesson in the art of performing. The sheer energy and Chutzpah of Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, The Who and Ravi Shankar (really, watch and learn!) is enthralling - we'll never see their like again. Overall, a fascinating package with many reminiscences by photographers and musicians in audio/visual and printed form - a detailed booklet is included which fleshes out the history behind the festival. A joy.

I bought this Blu-ray considering that the product description was right. It is announced as an All Regions Blu-Ray. I ordered it and this is Region 1 - that means I could not view it on may Region 2 Blu-Ray Player.
You should make the correction to avoid people to make unecessary mistakes.

I KNOW it is fantastic (having viewed some of it with a friend) without even seeing all the extra perfomances on here. And this really should be more widely available in the UK, especially on its 40th anniversary. But I would love to know where the previous 'reviewers' got their 'All Regions' copies from (????) as all I can find are Region 1 (NTSC) from the Amazon traders I have contacted. So, ARE there 'all regions' copies out there, and if so WHERE ---- pray tell ???

It has taken a long time to obtain a copy of this concert and although I am yet to watch it all what I have seen confirms it is a classic. The photography and sound for its' time is remarkable and of course you get to see anybody who was anmybody at the time including stand out performances from The Who and Hendrix. AQ classic

The quality of this is impressive, the remastering of the audio is superb. This festival achieved so many "firsts", incendiary performances and an international dimension.
It would be amazing to see a Blu ray of these, the first performances in the west by Ravi Shankar collated from these period recordings that were bank rolled by George Harrison.

It finally arrived. I've only watched disc 1 so far - but it was worth the wait. Opening with " If you're going to San Francisco" the memories of that era started to come back. I now have the 3 major festivals of the 60s/70s so I can escape the stresses of today for hours at any time.

My biggest gripe is that, having paid the price of the DVDs + Vat I then get stung by HM Customs for a further £14.

Given that I would recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys festivals and music. Janis Joplin and Otis Redding on the same lineup - awesome
