A lot of marketing books are heavy going but I like the idea of having something that's more accessible, that you can dip in and out of when needed. The worry about books like this are that they don't go into enough detail, but this has just the right amount. It's difficult to put into words, but if you understand the basic concepts of marketing this acts as both a reminder of best practice, and inspiration i.e. `I forgot about that', and `I will consider that in the future'. You know you should be using a lot of techniques but sometimes you forget, this jogs your memory.
The section I read in most detail was the one on `marketing in the digital age'. I found this to be very useful, and a great overview of the key issues and considerations. I'm not an expert in this area, but after reading this section I've definitely learned a lot, and will refer back to the book when reviewing our company's Social Media strategy.
I will definitely use the book, and its relevant sections, when I'm working on marketing plans, promotions etc. It's useful as a check list for best practice both on a strategic level (marketing plans etc), and a more tactical level (promotional activity etc).
This book will definitely be staying on my desk and will be well used.
I found the structure of the book helpful, with lots of clear diagrams and definitions. The subjects were also grouped so that you could easily find your way to the most important subjects for you.
I liked the fact that it had both operational details and strategic guidance on taking forward a marketing strategy and how to imbed it in the whole organisation.
It is also very current with advice and guidance on social media.

On Market Segmentation: "...is a process that identifies different requirements for people who buy, and as such is the key to successful marketing...(and) remains one of the most misunderstood and elusive of marketing skills and is often taught incorrectly in business schools and written about incorrectly in marketing books...poor segmentation is at the core of most business failures. At its heart are a number of judgments or insights that an organization makes about its customers, which rely on the skill, experience and creativity of the individuals involved. Too often, managers see markets as a series of fixed segments that are described in terms of the products they use...The Golden Rule: Select a segment and serve it. Do not straddle segments and sit between them."
On Customer Retention Strategies: "Many organizations concentrate on developing strategies to expand sales through market share dominance, market penetration, finding new markets and product range expansion. The main reason for focusing on these is that research has show than size, revenue growth and dominance are usually positively correlated with long-term survival and profitability.
