Can't agree with the previous reviewer regarding the sound quality. It ain't hi fi but I've heard a lot worse. This is a set that would only be bought by hard core Coltrane fans like myself anyway and on that basis it must be judged. The performances, fragmentary and otherwise, are excellent and truth to tell I think McCoy Tyner is better served sonically here than on some of the original Impulse recordings where he is deeply recessed in the mix. This is fine Coltrane and I highly recommend it. Peace to all!

Unless you have a good deal of the Coltrane Quartet, avoid this and buy other live recordings with better sound quality e.g.'Complete Village Vanguard Recordings'. These, as the blurb says, are historic and rare recordings and it has to be said playing is stupendous. However it is not a pleasant listening experience: the sound/mix of the group is distorted because of the poor quality of the recordings and in places the pitch suffers quite significantly too. A frustrating listen which I probably will not rush to repeat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Historically and musically great stuff, but low fidelity 7 Sept. 2014

Historically and musically great stuff, but low fidelity. This reminds me of listening to baseball games on AM radio as a kid.

If you are seriously studying Coltrane's career, by all means pick up this set. This comes at a pivotal and under-documented time in his development leading up to the classic quartet.

If are new to Coltrane or just want to listen for enjoyment, there are dozens of other recordings that you ought to fully digest before you bother with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set with something for everybody! Audio?? You decide.. 22 Feb. 2013
By The Grobe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
4 1/2 stars - This 3 CD set contains a full never-before released live performance from Coltrane during his peak years at a popular swinging Chicago jazz venue, the Hotel Sutherland. Some might say that only those hungry enough for these unearthed Coltrane performances will truley appreciate what's contained in these discs but I would beg to differ. Highlights include an absolutely stellar rendition of a Coltrane favorite, Summertime,as well as the origins of Impressions and extended versions of Greensleeves and the rare Bye Bye Blackbird. You get "over" the fuzzed-out, washed-out aluminum can drone that permeates this recording rather quickly. Albeit sub-par sound quality, this performance is definitely worth checking out for the casual listener (if you are familiar with the term BOOTLEG that is) and a MUST for the Coltrane professional . If you are looking for crisp, clean sound, you may want to look elsewhere, but be advised you'll be missing out on this very important piece of beautiful Coltrane history and innovation.
