I bought this collection primarily for the fortepiano concertos, as I'm no great fan of harpsichords particularly as a solo instrument. But the three discs that feature the harpsichords (the Berlin Harpsichord Concertos, 2 discs, and the Concertos op 1, 1-6) are pleasant enough and if that's your bag, I'm sure they'll give satisfaction. The 3 CDs featuring the piano (op7, 1-6; op13, 1-3 and op13, 4-6 & op14) are played with conviction and the instrument has a great sound. I have a version played by Ingrid Haebler that may be better recorded, but for me it lacks the energy and engagement of the playing by Anthony Halstead. Why these pieces are not better known baffles me. Probably he was overshadowed by Mozart, but his music is joyful and merits greater recognition.
I think the set is good value. Delivery was prompt as usual with Amazon, but one CD case was badly damaged though fortunately without effect on the CD.

I purchased this set om recommendations on Amazon.co.uk. I never had cause to regret. I am very fond of the music in this period between JS Bach and Mozart/Haydn. In fact, Mozart considered Johan Christian "London" Bach as one of his musical "fathers" and had met him in the very city. These keyboard concertos comprise both some set for the harpsichord and some, modern at the time, for the piano. Everything works beautifully here. This set is pure joy and one can easily appreciate why MOzart held this Bach son in so high regard.

Johann is the 13th son of Bach senior and was a marvelous surprise. Composition and music is so good. Plan to add more to my collection when funds are available!

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldilocks J.C. Bach 23 Nov. 2014
By Peter P. Fuchs - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
All of the CDs in this set are easy to enjoy, with stylish music full of a persuasive inspiration. The playing and conducting by Halstead is very idiomatic for the works themselves, which candidly means that he never tries to make them sound like utterly great music. This is the exactly correct approach, to my ears, as trying to make them into some harbinger of Mozart's concertos would de a disaster. Of course they were an important element in influencing Mozart, but one should never read or interpret works anachronistically, nevertheless. This is one case where a sort of Goldilocks interpretation really is the spot-on take necessary to make the works still enjoyable but not freighted with more than they are. With all that, there are so some very stirring moments, elegantly so. Halstead's playing is actually quite virtuosic in a unflappable way, without a trace of affectation that others have brought to some of these works, most notably Ingrid Haebler. I noticed another reviewer here praises Haebler's interpretations in order to bizarrely call into question Halstead's keyboard aplomb. That is not what one can hear on these fine CDs. Luckily, also, on these CDs the members of the Hanover Band do not go in for some of the sqwawkiness they have produced on other CDs.
