Having bought most of the literature compilations Delphi have produced, I was interested to experience their new venture into art books. Leonardo Works of Leonardo da Vinci (Masters of Art) and Vermeer have been covered at time of writing, and, though both are best appreciated on the PC Kindle application (needing colour, obviously), or on the Kindle Fire, if and when it comes to UK, they are a useful addition to the library. The pictures are arranged in chronological order, with informative, unpretentious commentary on each painting. The e-book also includes reproductions of details from the paintings highlighted in the commentary, and (typical of Delphi's enterprise) of paintings from other artists having a demonstrable influence on the work under discussion. This is an excellent way of getting to know an artist's work, neither patronising nor over-scholarly, and I look forward to collecting future productions in the series.

Vermeer has long been my "favourite" artist, since my days as a very young and impressionable artist The Milkmaid for instance has always captivated me. Now I learn it is a painting full of sexual overtones! The book gloriously illustrates every important painting Vermeer produced, including "detail" illustrations - close ups of various parts of each painting, and the painting is discussed in equal, but readable, detail including any sexual overtones!

Recommended. For the price, unbeatable.

This wonderful book not only showcases Vermeer's work but gives an explanation of how they came to be; the background to each painting. Some of the explanations are a little vague/basic but as you read on you get the impression that this is because little is known about his life. A great way to use the Kindle Fire's colour screen to full effect.

I can only agree with the previous two reviewers. This is a bargain at the price, and the paintings are reproduced very well. There is a short biography of Vermeer (but given what we reliably know about Vermeer, it is bound to be short), and the explanations accompanying the paintings are fine. On the whole, this is a well presented package.
